FlixBus in Alberta

Recommended Posts

Earlier today, I spotted a FlixBus MCI J4500 headed North on Highway 2 south of Olds.  This is the first time I have seen a FlixBus in person as well as in Alberta.  After looking around on their website, they do have destinations available including Calgary, Red Deer, Edmonton, Lethbridge, and Fort MacLeod, but I cannot find any schedule information for any of these destinations. I tried to book a trip on several future dates, but none were available.  It seems like these new routes have not started service but will be starting soon.  I could not find any start dates whatsoever either.  If anyone else has anything more to add to this, please let us know. Thank you!

There are rumours FlixBus will be starting Alberta service in this summer, and  Universal Coach Line will be the Contractor .

Couldnt even find Calgary to Edmonton on website ?? It should be an interesting battle on the Edmonton to Calgary as tjheirs several well established carriers their already on that corridor, they may extend to Lethbridge too but cant see them going any further not enough business for 2 carriers on most other routes.

It’s official… launching on Friday in Alberta… 4 buses each way between Calgary and Edmonton and 2 each way between Calgary and Lethbridge.

https://calgaryherald.com/news/local-news/new-bus-routes-alberta-flixbus

The Calgary to Edmonton coaches start at Southcentre Mall in Calgary and end up at 11525 Jasper Ave, T5K 0M7 Edmonton, AB… there is a stop at Red Deer in between. Universal Coach Lines is the contractor listed.

The Calgary to Lethbridge runs start at Southcentre Mall and go to 705 5 Ave S, T1J 0V4 Lethbridge, AB. They make intermediate stops at Okotoks-Aldersyde, Claresholm and Fort McLeod on the way. Also listed as Universal Coach Lines.

I wonder how they pick their Contractors?

Eastern Charter (a subsidiary of Universal) is a contractor for some routes in the Ontario network, so that may be why they have a bit of an in. But otherwise, I'm not sure. Flixbus tends to go for some of the cheaper companies, rather than the more established top-tier operators.

Didn't catch the first bus to leave Edmonton, but, I did go and track down the 11AM departure.

Universal #1138.

The first departure from Calgary was due into Edmonton at 11:25. It ended up being 10-15 minutes late.

Disappointingly, this trip used a plain Universal coach, #1129.

For the exception of Cal/Red Deer/Edm. the rest of the stops are pretty much same as Red Arrow.

Interesting how #1129 seems to be a BC unit with the 604 phone number on the back, but it has AB plates.
