Not any time soon to any of those. Metra barely has enough to cover what it has now and the growing ridership. South Shore has not really added service in years.

But do you think it will ever happen?

Metra still has to wait a few more years for fund to replace their motive power fleet. They do limited funds to buy a few more used F59's if they come up for sale. Reason why they are having to rebuild the F40's again is due to limited funds.

So, of those three routes, which do you think are most likely to eventually operate and which do you think will never happen?

Hey all. Apologize for the bump up on this thread. However some updates should be included on the wiki

The addition of the new SD70MACH units.

Unit 500 was delivered with a RTA Heritage Scheme.

15 units on order with options of 27 more, replacing the old F40PH-2 and -3 locomotives (not 104)

They entered service in late 2023.

Not all the liveries are mentioned:

90 is in the Chicago & North Western Livery

104 in the City of Chicago Livery

Additional info:

210 suffered a fire on June 13, 2019. It was eventually brought back to service in December 2020.

215 suffered a fire on December 3, 2018 and it hasn’t been brought back since.

Metra plans to convert some of it’s oldest diesel powered locomotive to battery electric power

  • Thanks 1

News from Metra, link to announcement available here.

"Metra charged into a greener future today when the Board of Directors approved a contract to buy zero-emission, battery-powered trainsets."

  • In a contract announcement with Stadler U.S., of Salt Lake City, Utah, Metra announced the following purchase of FLIRT trainsets;
    • "includes a $154 million base order for eight two-car, battery-powered trainsets, including engineering, training, and spare parts, with options costing up to an additional $181.4 million for eight more trainsets and up to 32 trailer cars, which could be added to the two-car trainsets to create three- or four-car trainsets."
    • "The trainsets will have low-level boarding and will be equipped with lifts to make them ADA-compliant. Each two-car set will seat 112 people, and each additional trailer car will provide seating for about 46 people. The single-level sets will have open gangways so riders can move freely from car to car. They will include such features as passenger information signs, bike racks, luggage racks and USB outlets. Half of the trailer cars, if purchased, would include ADA-accessible bathrooms."
    • Metra plans to introduce the trainsets between LaSalle St. and Blue Island on the Beverly Branch of the Rock Island Line, a distance of 16.4 miles.
      • A fully charged trainset is expected to have a range of 45 to 65 miles
    • The first sets are expected to be delivered in 2027-2028

But why flirt. They could at least get the bi level kiss version that Caltrain has.

A good video explaining the line and station spacing for those who aren't familiar.

Wait Metra is getting brand new trains? The last new locomotive they have purchased new was the MPI MP36PH-3S’s, and everything beyond was second hand equipment
