D40-90 Posted August 14, 2008 Report Posted August 14, 2008 I'm not to familiar with VIA's trains and stuff, but I remember this one engine that I use to see a lot. I beleive they are called LRC-1 or something. I was wondering if anyone has any info on them. I haven't seen them in the longest time. Did VIA get rid of them? I seen a picture of one, and the fleet number is 6917?? Does anyone have any info on them, like when they were built??? And if they are still in use? Thanks!!

The LRC rolling stock is still used but the locomotives were retired and replaced in 2001, IIRC, with the GE P42DC's.
Esterel01 Posted August 14, 2008 Report Posted August 14, 2008 Does anyone have any info on them, like when they were built??? And if they are still in use? It's all on VIA's web site at: http://www.viarail.ca/equipements/en_equipment.html Look at LRC under Car types.
Tom1122 Posted August 14, 2008 Report Posted August 14, 2008 There are three LRC locomotives parked at VIA's Toronto Maintenance Centre, one at VIA's Montreal maintenance Centre, and one at Exporail (which is still owned by VIA)

M. Parsons Posted August 18, 2008 Report Posted August 18, 2008 I've got two questions... 1. Was there ever any plans for an electric version of the LRC? 2. Was there any speed advantage to using an LRC locomotive and LRC cars vs. a P42 or F40 was LRC cars?
smallspy Posted August 18, 2008 Report Posted August 18, 2008 Wowzers!Do we want to create a page with a photo of each LRC loco/car as well? Tempting.... I've got two questions...1. Was there ever any plans for an electric version of the LRC? Not to the best of my knowledge, although I don't have much internal paperwork from either CN, VIA, Bombardier or MLW on them. 2. Was there any speed advantage to using an LRC locomotive and LRC cars vs. a P42 or F40 was LRC cars? Compared to an F40, yes. The F40's are governed at a maximum of either 90mph or 95mph (depending on the unit), and on top of that have speed restrictions at some curves because of their weight. The LRC locomotives were considerably lighter (215,000lbs vs. 262,000lbs) and had a far lower center of gravity, and thus were not as hard on the track in curves especially. Compared to a P42 however, there is no longer a difference. The P42's are geared and governed for 110mph (although they are only allowed 100mph). At first though, CN would allow them to operate at the full 100mph, but forced VIA to operate them at the lower, F40 restriction on curves. After testing, CN was convinced to remove the lower curve restriction on the P42s, and they now operate (more or less) at the same speeds that the LRC locos did. Dan
