NABIs are hated systemwide so you won't see them out as much anymore and if they are out they're mainly on the longest routes to rack up milage which is why you'll see a lot on the C8, L8, T2, and others just for milage to be racked up and retired early.

Take this with a grain of salt, but I heard a rumor over on FB that Four Mile Run might be getting some #4600s.... it was from a couple people.

Currently we down like 60ish buses. You’ll probably see some LFRs and new XD40s coming soon in order to fill in the shortages.

All I know is, WMATA will need to issue a new RFP for 500-800 new buses for later on in the decade once this current contract from 2019 comes to a close  next year. By 2025-26, all the remaining New Flyer DE42LFAs, DE37LFAs, most 2011-2013 XDE40s, the 2012 Orion 7.503 EPA10 3Gs, and possibly the 2014-15 NABI BRT 42 hybrids will all be due for retirement.

Can someone explain how Metro possibly has a bus shortage right now?

Consider:

  • New buses have been steadily arriving for the past 2-3 years -- CNGs, diesels, artics...
  • While older vehicles are gradually retiring, the majority of 12+ year old subfleets (DE42LFAs, mainly) are still largely intact
  • No part of the bus fleet is sidelined for a long-term defect or recall (though you can never be too sure with the NABI 42-BRTs...)
  • Finally... with scores of peak-hour routes still suspended, requirements are down by like 200 buses compared to 2019

How does that add up to a shortage?

Operations are saying it’s a shortage atm. And you are right it isn’t much of a storage but I’m not sure why operators are saying it a shortage. Seems only likely bc the LFRs are out a lot at Landover and nobody wanna drive a 42 BRT.

Also 6355 and 6361 are the next confirmed units back in service currently at Shepherd Parkway. Looks like if WMATA will bring back some of these LFAs they will be heading to Shepherd Parkway.

Part of the reason too is the introduction of new routes, some of which require more buses then what currently exist in the fleet. 3F, 21C, 11C, NH2, etc. Some of those lines didn't replace a pre-existing line. In addition, WMATA sold some buses to Fairfax Connector too. 6 2010 New Flyer DE42LFA hybrids and 6 2012 Orion 7.503 EPA10 3G Hybrids. Some C40LFR CNGs had also been retired without apparent replacements. Same could be said with the D40LFRs although most have been replaced with the #4500s.

Drove by both Bladensburg depot and CET/Landover depot yesterday and noticed a few things: renovation work at Bladensburg is well underway and WMATA has parked some buses on a sperate lot across the street on New York avenue, included a few 2007 New Flyer C40LFR CNGs along with typical XN40 CNGs and XDE60 hybrids. CET still have a ton of new 2022 XD40s sitting OOS along with a few retired 2005 New Flyer DE40LF hybrids and 2006 DE40LFR hybrids. More 2005-06 hybrids were parked OOS at Landover itself too.

Yeah I heard no C40LFR or D40LFR from Blade have been scratched as of yet. Not sure if anything new has been moved to CET where 6004, 6150, 6165, and 7100 are. Gotta catch them before the Orange Line shutdown this summer.

Will Bladensburg be able to hold all the buses there with the new lot until 2027 or is it possible some might be transferred to FMR?

Four Mile Run depot is almost completely full to capacity anyway. They can't really take in anymore buses. However, Arlington Transit is building a new Depot near Shirlington that will be completed by summer 2024. When that happens, it is possible that ART will transfer their FMR operations over to the new permanent garage. If that happens, it could be possible that WMATA might buy that extra space from the county to store more of their own buses there.

Eh, didn't look that big. Maybe 50-60 buses could be stored there.

Doubt ART will get rid of that space as they recently renovated it like a few years ago. Possibly just another place for buses to be stored.

I’m surprised Cinder Bed isn’t helping with more routes especially on the weekends.  Interested in seeing if they get more this spring.

Yeah, wasn't they supposed to get the 10A and 10B lines? 21C as well?

They should get the 11C and some 28A trips.

I think WMATA will bring more routes to Cinder Bed this summer. Right now they're just seeing what can be handled or what not it seems which is why they didn't add any new routes when they took it over. If they do take them over, I can see the 8W, 10A, 10B, 11C, 21C, 28A, and 28F go there as well. FMR might keep the 7, 16, 22 lines while helping some other routes in the process. Not sure what's going to happen but things will be interesting soon.

I can see them certainly taking the 8W, 10A, 10B, 11C, and 21C. I still think the 28A and 28F is a bit of a stretch though. However, from an operational standpoint, if they do take all of the above, then that could free up some CNGs to head over to Sheppard's Parkway Depot, possibly #2917-2980 or so.

Possibly to replace the #6300s and #6400s over there.

2009 New Flyer DE42LFA #6372 is still out of Cinder Bed depot. It's currently on the REX.

They were running several on the 29K/N today too.  You would think they would only use them if they had no other options.

Cinder Bed mainly uses the XDE40s and XD40s mainly since 85% of their routes are rush hour only and doesn't require a lot of buses. LFAs and NABIs sprinkled in too. Probably will see an increase of usage if Cinder Bed gets more routes.
