51 University is an bus route operated by the Hamilton Street Railway in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

Route Details

51 University is a high-ridership bus route that travels from as far west as West Hamilton Loop a to as far east as the Hamilton GO Centre that started in 1971 as a branch of the 5 Delaware, entitled 5D UNIVERSITY. It was renumbered 51 in 1989. It operates from September to April to correspond to the McMaster University year.

Vehicles

51 University usually operates 2007 or 2009 New Flyer DE60LFR articulated buses. However, on rare occasions New Flyer D40LFs, New Flyer C40LF and Orion VI CNGs may be dispatched for rush hour services. This was the last route to become fully accessible in September 2009. Previously, this route has used General Motors TA60-102Ns

History

  • 1971 - New service begins starting from McMaster University and ending in Downtown Hamilton.
  • 1989 - Renumbered to route 51 University
  • August 31, 2003 - Route extended from McMaster University to West Hamilton loop at request of McMaster Student Union
  • September 2009 - Route became fully accessible after the retirement of the MCI Classics.

Branch 51, from West Hamilton Loop would continue eastbound on Wilson Street/Main Street until it reached Whitney Avenue, taking Whitney all the way to Emerson Street and heading into the McMaster Campus. Once it reaches the campus, it continues northbound on University Avenue to Sterling Street, where it then goes eastbound to King Street. It then goes east on King Street until it reaches Longwood Road where it proceeds southbound on Longwood to Main Street, servicing Westdale Secondary School. The route continues east on Main Street until James Street where it goes southbound until it reaches the Hamilton GO Centre platform 17, Westbound trips heading to West Hamilton Loop would leave the Hamilton GO Centre and continue northbound on John Street to King Street, taking King Street until reaching Sterling Street where it would head west until University Avenue leaving the McMaster campus, heading southbound on Emerson Street to Whitney Avenue, taking Whitney westbound to Main Street West where it would continue westbound to West Hamilton Loop.
