History
In mid-2005, OCTA approved an order of 50 CNG New Flyer buses (possibly the C40LF model instead of the C40LFR as delivered) for $21.4 million with delivery in late 2006 with about half of those units being used for a bus rapid transit service on Harbor Blvd. that was supposed to begin in early 2007.[1] The additional 249 units (the second part of the 2007 batch and the later 2008 series) added to the initial order were made the following year for $106 million, which would have increased the total number of large buses from 564 to 756.[2] They replaced remaining 1980 GMC RTS-03 buses, some 1989 Gillig Phantoms, and most 1990 New Flyer D40 non-suburban buses.
Units 5501-5508, 5510-5534, 5540, and 7529 have the old 1996-2004 New Flyer logo on their build plate stickers.
All buses from this series were operated in-house at the time of delivery. Some units transferred to MV Transportation (later First Transit in 2015) at the Irvine Sand Canyon base in 2011. In late 2016 to early 2017, units 5636-5674 and 7501-7529 transferred to Anaheim base where they replaced the LNG NABI buses during the delivery of the 2016 New Flyer Xcelsior units while units 5571-5635 transferred to Irvine base during the same time period. Santa Ana base later acquired 5513, 5530-5553 while Irvine received 5636-5642 in 2018. In February to June 2022, units 5643-5644 and 5646-5647 were operated by Irvine base, only to be transferred back to Anaheim upon losing routes 167 and 178 to in-house operation. As of 2022, units 5501-5553, and 5565-5570 are currently operated in-house at Santa Ana base; all other units are contracted to First Transit at the Anaheim and Sand Canyon bases. In October 2022, units 5509, 5513, 5519, 5525 and 5529 were reassigned to Garden Grove base to cover XN40s that are currently being repowered. In February 2023, units 5501, 5503, and 5514 were transferred to Garden Grove base to replace 5121-5123 after the latter buses were moved to Irvine base. Units 5636, 5637, 5638, 5639, and 5640 were transferred to Anahiem base in May 2023; however, they eventually stopped running when the in-house New Flyer XN40 buses transferred there.
Almost all of the units from this series were originally built with Cummins Westport C Gas Plus engines; they were later rehabbed with ISL G engines and EMP cooling fans in 2013-2016. 7529 was originally built with a Cummins Westport ISL G engine, and had its engine replaced with a Near-Zero version in 2017-2018. Select units from this series were repainted; 5501-5502, 5504-5505, 5508-5511, 5514, 5516-5518, 5520-5521, 5523-5524, 5526, 5528-5529, 5533, 5535, 5537-5538, 5540-5542, 5544-5545, 5547, 5549, 5553, 5557, 5566-5568, 5570-5571, 5575-5576, 5578-5580, 5586-5587, 5589-5591, 5596, 5602, 5610, 5617, 5637, 5661, 5663, 5669, 7501-7502, 7512, and 7522 retained the original two-stripe paint scheme with OC Bus decals given, while 5503, 5506, 5513, 5515, 5519, 5522, 5534, 5539, 5548, 5550, 5565, 5588, 5597-5599, 5601, 5603-5605, 5613, 5615, 5618, 5621-5623, 5625, 5627, 5629, 5642, 5645, 5653, 5662, 5673, 7503-7504, 7506, 7508, 7513-7514, 7517, 7522, and 7524 were repainted in the current blue OC Bus paint scheme.
Retirement for this series started in early 2021 during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, with tripper runs removed during the February 2021 service changes alongside service reductions across the whole OC Bus system. All but at least few of these units are to be replaced with Gillig Low Floor buses (2101, 2102-2199, 2201-2266). 5 units were also replaced with battery-electric buses.[3] As of 2024, almost all of the Anaheim units were decommissioned with one remaining, with 8 units running at Garden Grove and about 10 at Irvine. The Santa Ana buses were rarely used in service until early 2024.
