History
In mid-2005, OCTA approved an order of 50 CNG New Flyer buses (possibly the C40LF model instead of the C40LFR as delivered) for $21.4 million with delivery in late 2006 with about half of those units being used for a bus rapid transit service on Harbor Blvd. that was supposed to begin in early 2007.[1] The additional 249 units (the second part of the 2007 batch and the later 2008 series) added to the initial order were made the following year for $106 million, which would have increased the total number of large buses from 564 to 756.[2] They replaced remaining 1980 GMC RTS-03 buses, some 1989 Gillig Phantoms, and most 1990 New Flyer D40 non-suburban buses.
Units 5501-5508, 5510-5534, 5540, and 7529 have the old 1996-2004 New Flyer logo on their build plate stickers.
All buses from this series were operated in-house at the time of delivery. Some units transferred to MV Transportation (later First Transit in 2015) at the Irvine Sand Canyon base in 2011. In late 2016 to early 2017, units 5636-5674 and 7501-7529 transferred to Anaheim base where they replaced the LNG NABI buses during the delivery of the 2016 New Flyer Xcelsior units while units 5571-5635 transferred to Irvine base during the same time period. Retirement for this series started in early 2021 during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, with tripper runs removed during the February 2021 service changes alongside service reductions across the whole OC Bus system. 5 additional units were expected to be replaced with battery-electric buses.[3]
