Why would the MTA purchase foreign junk that is not even up to buy America/New York standards?

2008 Orion 7.501 NG Hybrid #3812 is now retired out of JFK Depot. About 4-5 more units to go.

2023 Nova LFS's #9084 and #9085 delivered NEW to JFK Depot.

>foreign junk

>one of the most popular bus model in the european market

Next you're gonna tell us the new Mercedes-Benz coach is also a foreign junk despite it being fit for the US market?

Boy i do hope MAN, Mercedes, Iveco and all those european bus brand start to sell their bus in the US just to trash on how conservative the bus market is in the us, look at how Gillig handle those things

If anything, the solaris would just be novabus 2.0

You need to checkout these reports and videos of foreign electric bus fires and tell me again if you think its a good idea to import these things over......

Gotta hand it to you, you went above and beyond with this little display of desperation to prove ....the completely WRONG point. Nova bus's suppliers have nothing to do with this discussion. Fact of the matter is, they are a trusted, homegrown product that many large cities have been using for about 30 years now ( I don't even personally like the LFS, but it's been around as long as it has because it is doing something right). Solaris, BYD, and Designline even are all/were foreign makers that all have newer untested tech for the American market to dissect.

Seriously, both of you sound stupid as all hell right now. You better get your facts straight boys.

>whataboutism

At least euro buses are confy to ride with, unlike some american bus model, that's for sure

Thr Bus manufacturing industry is a tough market. All these custom specs make difficult to be sustainable and make a reasonable profit. Look at all the guaranteed order Nova gets in Quebec , and they are still downsizing.

Looks at Flyer, borrowing money from the government, despite being a major stake in the market.

Detroit Diesel doesn't even make engines for the transit market anymore.

Cummins had to pull out from making hybrid engines for articulated buses. To the point where NFI didn't offer the hybrid artic for a short while.

Look at how many bus manufacturers left in the last two years. Van hool, etc.

It's way more profitable to be in coaches and trucking , than in transit industry.

Most ppl that want GM back are saying so out of pure geek feelings. And not logical business mind perspective. Accessibility and new propulsion will make it extremely difficult to even enter the market. Then add on buying local, and the supply chain issue. It's will be suicidal for anyone to enter a market where a profit is slim and by chance.

As you mentioned , RTS only came about because of the federal project to get accessible buses and buses of the future. In the late 60s into the 1970s, and GM took advantage by using that to build a new product. Something they weren't supposed to do, but did anyways.

The transit bus industry is not as simple, I even saw companies making sure they have diversity hiring as part of buying new buses. It's bad enough making a bus is difficult, then add on social causes.

The issues have been going on since the 70s, with luck and chances that some bus manufacturers are still around. NFI is really the only transit bus manufacturer that's still around from the 60s. To their credit, considering where they make buses, it's not near a major transit system to get the "local" support

This issue could be fixed if the us market followed the european way but noooooo

As of yesterday, there's some major bus swaps going on. Among other transfers, MHV Depot received 2009 Orion 7.501 NG Hybrids #4044, #4093, #4104, #4427 and #4452 from Fresh Pond Depot. MHV Depot also received 2014-2015 New Flyer XD40 #7301 from Fresh Pond as well. Moreover, they got 2015-2016 Nova LFS's #8379, and #8395 from Kingsbridge Depot as well as 2021-2022 Nova LFS Hybrid #9850, also from KB Depot.

Meanwhile MJQ Depot received 2018-2019 New Flyer XD40s #7643, #7653, #7695, #7700, and #7703 from Flatbush Depot.

Gun Hill Depot got 2014-2015 New Flyer XD40s #7134, #7184, #7190, #7278-79, #7287, #7296, and #7364 along with 2018-2019 XD40s #7739 and #7813, all of which are from Fresh Pond.

These moves are suspected to be the result of a number of Manhattan division 2021-2022 Nova LFS Hybrids being OOS. Not sure now Fresh Ponds will be able to properly make service tomorrow as they are down over 16 buses..

Also, 2023-2024 New Flyer XD40 #9300, delivered NEW to LGA Depot.

In hindsight, they should really send some MTA BC NG Hybrids back over to NYCTA until this apparent shortage is resolved.

It was only on hold basically

I noticed they were saying on the forums sometime last summer that this bus was considered retired (which honestly is dumb as the damage appears to be very minor. The MTA had repaired buses in far worse shape in the past (for instance, 2011 Nova LFS #8017 or the various 2011-2012 Orion 7.501 EPA10 3G Clean diesels flooded by IDA in 2021)).

Some NYCT bus news: according to NYCTF, the MTA had a board meeting either this morning or yesterday and among the topics, came up the deployment of both the 60 2023-2024 New Flyer XE40s and the future 2025+ New Flyer XE40s. For the initial wave, Kingsbridge Depot is no longer in the running and those units will instead be split between the remaining 4 depots (GA,CH,ENY, and MJQ). ENY is expected to get 22 units now, so those will and the GA units will probably push around older XD40s and retire all of the remaining 2009-2010 Orion 7.501 NG Hybrids in Brooklyn. The ones at MJQ should pretty much spell the end of the NG Hybrids over at MHV Depot by pushing out some 2021-2022 Nova LFS Hybrids over to them. The ones on Staten Island (Charleston Depot) will likely push out some 2015/16 LFS or 2019 LFS's to either QV or JA depots, who would in turn push a few 2022 Nova LFS's to CS Depot to retire their remaining 2010 Orion 7.501 NG Hybrids (#4600s and #4700s). None of this is confirmed, but this is the most likely course of action that the MTA will take to retire the last of the Orion 7.501 NG buses on the NYCT side. Once the full follow-up orders get here, expect the original 270~ BTE test buses from 2011-2012 to be retired along with most of the 2011-2013 New Flyer C40LF CNGs.

Additionally, as mentioned before, the MTA is going ahead with the purchase of 5 Solaris Electric buses as well as 5 MCI D45CT LEs (replacing the Nova LFSE+ order (which was apparently cancelled as well due to Nova's exit from the US market, don't be surprised if WMATA does the same with their similar order), and the Van Hool order).
