I was just on 159 and saw that the handicap seat and the side facing seat on the right side are missing. Any reason for this?

It's designated as "Priority Area" to make more room for wheelchairs/strollers. Only 159 and 160 has them (as this is an experimentation only).

The report stressed six key weaknesses in the current system:

• Poor service frequency

• Lack of direct routes

• Unreliable and unpredictable route schedules

• Inadequate and uneven distribution of service

• Trips requiring many transfers with little time allotted

• Lack of two-directional service and a route system that doesn’t accommodate growth

How bad is it? Maybe you guys could look at Winnipegs example:

- Base routes, with timed 30/60 minute feeders stopping at either terminus points or major places (shopping centre/bigbox centre)

- Development of express rush hour service

- Crosstown routes, which run outside the City Centre

I might create a version of it on Google Maps, if anyones interested! Vid probably might

Google Maps gets screwy after so many lines (to the point where you can't see all routes at the same time.....) , so if anyone (vid, since I know from SSP that he has the software) wants to take my idea and improve it, go right ahead! :)

Red - Main Route

Green - Feeder

Blue - Crosstown

Yellow- Express/Rush Hour service

Route 1: Porcupine

- Covers Arthur and Victoria.

- Provides service to "Porcupine" area

Route 2: Walsh/Airport

- Covers high school, Airport, key transfer route

Route 3: Valhalla

- Covers the Valhalla hotel, "Arthur Street Marketplace", West Fort William

Route 4: Edward/Balmoral

- Key transfer route

- Covers Lakehead University and Confederation College

Route 5: Redwood

- Feeder for "Redwood" area.

Route 6: Redwood Express

- Covers the mall, Redwood area, Transit Garage, north-central Thunder Bay

Route 7: Pacific

- Covers Pacific neighborhood

Route 8: Lakehead Express

- Covers both Confederation College and Lakehead University

Route 9: Simpson

- Covers mall and Simpson St.

Route 10: MAINLINE!

- Replaces former Route 3 service

Route 11: Alloy

- Transfer between Route 4 and mall

Route 12: William (Winnipeg much?)

- Covers Redwood area and the mall

Route 13: Oliver

- Covers the garage, Oliver, Hospital, "Sunrise" area and John Street.

(continually adding onto post, saving before-hand incase PC crashes...)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As for fleet expansion (to remove interlining once and for all, mwa-ha-ha-ha), I suggest:

- 20 buses, 40ft (Nova?) and for the feeders,

- 12 Arbocs (roughly $150,000 isn't it?)

That or get some NFI XD30s/D30LFRs...

Except for express rush hour service, what you described is what we have, and what we will get. The new layout is just tweaked to reflect current commuter dynamics. Thunder Bay is small enough that unlike Winnipeg, when we change a route in a newly developing area, we have to change all of the routes.

Express rush hour service could do well for the suburbs and Industrial areas! The 49 in Winnipeg is usually full of standees leaving Downtown. As for Thunder Bay though, no idea. Please tell me they're axeing Route 4. That seems like such a waste of a needed bus... or if Thunder Bay is going to buy Arbocs to cover such routes if they want to keep it.

What are the major employment centres in Thunder Bay? Or the highest frequency routes? Maybe I can spend today coming up with another map :)

I'd like to give input but I have no time. Going on vacation to Winnipeg in a few days. If anyone wants transit maps or something from Winnipeg let me know and I'll try and get some.

1ajs gave us alot of time to prepare for this! :P and I'd be down to show you where to get them, along with where the garage is, etc etc

A lot of time?

You guys are planning all this stuff for me to do and I haven't even started packing yet. Apparently we're going swimming somewhere.

Anyway, the biggest issue I can see with your map is that you're applying Winnipeg's size to your logic. Thunder Bay isn't big enough for a little loop route in a neighbourhood that doesn't really go anywhere and just brings people to another route for them to transfer to. In Winnipeg there are more major destinations for them. Route five, for example, doesn't go to any of our five main transfer areas, even though it gets very close to one.

Mostly, its the other guys doing the planning. I have no idea what plans they have in store other than the SSP meeting at some sort of tavern, Kings Head i think. I'm too poor to plan anything lmao :P

Oh okay, so my map in Thunder Bay is in need of pretty much routes to the two "downtowns" then? Along with Lakehead, Confederation and for-sure Intercily SC.

Via Facebook:

Transit will continue servicing the East End on Sundays until further notice. The route will start on regular route through East End, then north on Simpson to Intercity Shopping Centre, south on Simpson to City Hall Terminal, and return to the East End. Service will arrive every 20 minutes between 9AM and 6PM. A schedule will be published to the Transit website shortly.

Cool. I'll have to check them out when I get home. Because they're in front of my apartment and I don't really have a choice, I'll see them anyway.

I saw that too, pulling into the transit garage. I am guessing that is why there is an oil spill at Red River and Court in front of the BMO? Considering the bus is 14 years old now, I doubt they would fix it even if it was repairable, because Red River and Court is a mess and 214 has been having problems for years now.

THUMBS Down to Thunder Bay Transit’s “eco-friendly green bus stop signs. It might have seemed like a good idea in winter, but summer’s green foliage makes them incredibly difficult to see. Unless you know for certain where the stops are, it’s easy to walk past them and not notice them at all. Give me back the old blue ones anytime. They might not have been beautiful but at least you could recognize them for what they were.”

Aww. :(
