Hyundai Rotem wins $US 664m order for LA Metro trains

HYUNDAI Rotem has beaten rival Stadler to win an order from Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transit Authority (LACMTA) to supply 182 HR5000 cars for the LA Metro.

The contract value is around $US 663.7m and includes provision for a follow-on order for 50 cars vehicles at an additional and as yet unspecified cost.

HR will deliver two-car trains, each with a capacity of 245 passengers, designed to enable up to three trains to run in multiple. They will operate on LA Metro’s B (Red) Line, which runs for 26.4km between downtown LA and northern Hollywood, and the D (Purple) Line, which runs between downtown LA and Koreatown (10.3km).

Hyundai Rotem has committed to delivering the new trains ahead of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics and Paralympics, when passenger numbers are expected to soar.

“Based on the experience and capabilities we have accumulated while carrying out numerous local projects in the United States, we will do our best to deliver electric trains that will satisfy both local citizens and tourists,” says a spokesperson for Hyundai Rotem.

LACMTA has stressed that the contract was decided on factors in addition to price, including contract fulfilment ability, performance, quality, and technology. Stadler queried this bid assessment methodology, but LACTMA has insisted that Hyundai Rotem, whose bid was the most expensive, had still won.

Last summer LACMTA took delivery of the first of a new fleet of HR4000 trains ordered from CRRC in December 2016 and assembled at the Chinese supplier’s plant in Springfield, Massachusetts. The 64 cars, which arrived significantly later than expected, could finally enter service later this year, also on lines B and D.

The order for the HR4000 trains was the first from a $US 647m framework deal that included options for a further 218 vehicles, which LACMTA has not exercised.

These Hyundai Rotems HR5000s look better than those HR4000 trains that Metro already has

Unit 8703 was involved in the pepper spray incident that killed one man inside the bus in Koreatown. The Suspect was arrested and sent to jail.

Lacmta is having many issues with crime, homeless people and drug addict people messing around the subway, bus and light rail stations a lot in the ghetto area.

Their safety and security needs to be stepped up. LACMTA should follow Santa Monica’s Big Blue Bus by adding safety officers on the bus, especially on higher routes. They need to do something about this mess

Reminds me of New York City and Philadelphia (SEPTA) that are also going through similar situations and deploying additional resources to try and address the situation.

Especially since I know New York City has been drawing from the National guard along with state troopers to bolster security alongside NYPD to address security issues.

I do agree that something should be done with the crisis transit agencies are facing dealing with such security issues.

Got the info from SoCal Bus Fans Facebook Group.

10000 Series BYD K9MD - ER 2023-24 were arrived at LACMTA CMF yard today from the BYD Dealership. They have rear windows  and smaller tail lights similar to SF Muni Units. Unsure if the fleet numbers are confirmed for 10005-10099 (additional 95 unit order for J Line and Local Service)

One bus was hijacked by a suspect and crashed into someone's building. The entire front end was damaged including the building. One suspect is now in custody. Unsure if the bus operator left the keys on ignition inside the bus unattended in the ghetto area themselves or forgot to lock their doors themselves using the keyhole.

One of the BYD units from 10005-10099 series being delivered, others entering service currently or undergoing acceptance testing.

~40 units to be assigned to the J line, remainder will be used for D9 local service

These units are extended range ER models

A Metro E Line Train in Downtown Los Angeles has collided with a USC Shuttle Bus. Metro has said that the bus has crossed into the trains path. 18 people were taken to the hospital and 37 people were treated and released from the scene, from what Los Angeles fire Captain Adam VanGerpen had said

That means a huge bus order must be in the works to replace the rest of the NABI 45 Metro CNGs and eventually the New Flyer XN40 CNGs too.

I doubt the XN40s are going to get converted, but with ENC going out of business at the end of the year, this could complicate the overhaul process for the latest Axess CNGs,

Wasn't around 200+ subway cars?

On 1/24/2024 at 11:21 PM, Glennwood Road Ent. said:

757 CNG buses are scheduled to be converted to battery-electric during their midlife refits in 2027 and 2028 as part of Metro's efforts to operate an entirely zero-emission fleet by 2032. This will consist primarily of 2020 and later ENC Axess vehicles but may include what are currently New Flyer XN60s.

Hmmm so that may mean that Metro might start to retire the XN40s pretty soon

As a matter of fact, perhaps LACMTA should postpone the Zero Emissions goal until 2045 as those Axess CNGs are still brand new. So are the XN60s. Or perhaps the XN40s could be repowered into XE40s for a life extension given the current bus crisis on ENC's part.

I would like to announce the service change update back in 2020 until the current service update in 2024 so however, the Next Generation implemented changes aka NextGen Plan already impacted some of the rerouted bus lines, including adding bus lines, and some are the discontinued bus lines as well.

Here is the proof of service change by LACMTA:

1. In December 2020, the 8 Rapid bus lines (705, 710, 728, 740, 745, 751, 760, 762) /6 local bus lines (126, 254, 442, 607, 612, 625) were discontinued due to Consolidation notable changes including the Line 258 has been rerouted from Altadena to Highland Park are due to low ridership reasons on Oak Knoll Avenue then plus the rerouted of Floral Drive and Eastern Ave in favor of directly instead of Monterey Pass Road but the problem is Cal State LA Transit Center were not discontinued on Line 258 since June 2016 that took place because the Line 485 were discontinued long story short for Metro. The Metro Micro Transit has already been started in service areas of the LAX & Watts/Willowbrook. The 10 (Lines 300 Limited Stop Series) were discontinued including some other bus lines that were rerouted from Seventh St to Sixth/Fifth Streets because the bus lanes were one-way in both directions. Line 487 is truncated from Westlake & MacArthur Station to Terminal 25 (weekday peak hours) / nearby LA Union Station of Alameda St and Expressway Entrance near Aliso Street.

2. In June 2021, the 8 Rapid Bus Lines (734, 744, 750, 757, 770, 780, 788, 794) / 16 local bus lines (17, 68, 71, 83, 91, 163, 175, 176, 183, 201, 239, 245, 252, 264, 685, 687) were discontinued. Rapid Line 761 is recommencing to take over Local Line 234 and Rapid 734 coverage but Local Line 233 (Owl Service Only) of West LA. Line 176 no longer serves Highland Park because Line 258 has already been in preparation for Highland Park since December 2020 also Line 287 is recommencing to take over Local Line 176 (El Monte - Montebello) coverage segments. The Metro Micro Transit has already been started in service areas of the Altadena/Sierra Madre/Pasadena & Glendale/Highland Park/Eagle Rock zones. Line 617 was already adding service from Culver City Gold (E Line) Station to Beverly Hills (Beverly Dr & Pico Bl) due to Local Line 17 whole portion cancellations. Line 28 and Rapid 720 have been truncated instead of distance lines (ex: Line 720 used to serve Commerce Center back then that's how Line 720 ended 6th St and Central Ave because due to notable change). Line 70 has been rerouted to Cesar E. Chavez Ave and Atlantic Blvd instead of serving on Garvey Ave/Ramona Blvd directly because due to Line 770 coverage in favor of more frequent service on Cesar E. Chavez Av. Perhaps, Line 202 has been truncated from Wilmington to Del Amo Blue (A Line) Station including adding midday service due to demand issues. Line 78 has been truncated to Live Oak/Santa Anita Avenues instead of Myrtle/Longden Avenues.  Line 106 has added weekend services and rerouted as well so Line 106 starts services from Montebello (The Shops At Montebello) and Monterey Park (Atlantic Blvd & Emerson Ave Layover). Line 251 has already been extended to Eagle Rock due to Line 28 coverage that's led to a shortened LA Union Station on Line 28. Line 662 has been adding service counter-clockwise direction in Pasadena/Altadena. Some of the bus lines were affected by implementing changes. Line 577 is not served at Los Cerritos Center Mall anymore due to impact changes. Line 487 was truncated from El Monte Station to Sierra Madre Villa Station due to Metro Micro temporarily then later in June 2024 Line 268 served on the Sierra Madre area.

3. In September 2021, the 2 Rapid Lines (704, 733) were discontinued including Line 242/243 were truncated to Devonshire Street instead serving of the Porter Ranch areas due to Metro Micro Transit has been added service of the Northwest San Fernando Valley zone. Line 656 Owl service was discontinued so basically, Line 224 has added Owl service for Line 656 coverage.  Line 106 was rerouted instead of serving on State Street in both directions but Line 106 goes on First St, Los Angeles Street, Alameda St, Cesar E. Chavez Ave, Mission Road, and Marengo Street in both directions.

4. In December 2021, Lines 256 and 260 were truncated because of the adding new bus lines which are 660, and transition to Commerce Transit Line 200 (Cal State Transit Center - Commerce Center). Line 79 was merged the Line 179 (Huntington Drive/Monterey Road - Arcadia Station) for shortened lines instead of going to Downtown LA.  Some of the bus lines were rerouted including Line 200 were discontinued to merge Line 2 for Line 200 coverage. Line 51 was truncated from Wilshire/Vermont Station to Westlake/MacArthur Park Station.

5. In June 2022, Line 130 was discontinued due to the tradition of Long Beach Transit Line 141 adding service Artesia Station to Los Cerritos Center so previously Line 130 was used along Los Cerritos Center to Redondo Beach since June 2021, Line 130 has been shortened from Redondo Beach to Harbor Gateway Transit Center due to the transition of Torrance Transit Line 13 (Redondo Beach - Harbor Gateway Transit Center).

6. In October 2022, Line 534 was discontinued to merge the Line 134 but Santa Monica to Malibu will remain so by the way, since December 2020, the Point Dume has no longer served due to low ridership on Line 534. Personally, the Point Dume used to serve Metro Line 534 back then before the December 2020 changes.

7. In December 2022, Line 550 was truncated to Harbor Gateway Transit Center with weekday peak hours but previously it used to be served from San Pedro to Harbor Gateway Transit Center 7 days a week including USC to San Pedro weekday peak hours. Line 550 has remained from USC to Harbor Gateway Transit Center as weekday peak hours.  Line 246 was been rerouted from south of Anaheim Street at Avalon Blvd then Harry Bridges Bl and John S Gibson Boulevard to Anaheim St, Figueroa Street, Pacific Coast Highway (Line 232 together), Normandie Ave, Vermont Ave/Gaffey Street Line 550 coverage includes new segments on Channel St (both directions). Line 205 was rerouted with shortened to Harbor Blvd / Sixth Street instead of Gaffey Street and Twelve Street layover while the LADOT Dash San Pedro Line changes. Line 92 was relocated to stop on Glenoaks Blvd and Central Ave instead of Little Glenoaks Blvd for Downtown LA only.

8. In June 2023, Line 256 was shortened from Cal State Transit Center to Highland Park Blue (A Line) Station due to low ridership segments of Monterey Hills but it served Metro Micro and Line 665 extension to Rose Hills Transit Center for Line 256 coverage. Line 169 was added for weekend service and Line 51 was added the last stop layover shortline of 6th St and Bixel St instead of Terminal 25.

9. In December 2023, Line 180 was reinstated on Central Avenue before June 2021 changes instead of Brand Blvd but previously in June 2021 changes instead of going on Central Avenue in both directions due to Line 780 coverage temporarily. Line 108 has an extension to Slauson Ave and Passons Blvd layover instead of Slauson Ave and Paramount Bl including the shortline to Commerce on Eastern Avenue (Line 258 served) instead of Slauson and Eastern due to Slawson Center provided. Line 53 was rerouted from I-105 Fwy and 120th St (Central Ave and Wilmington Av both directions) then back to 120th St and then on Compton Ave in both directions as well but previously it used to be served on Avalon Green (C Line Station) back then personally in December 2021 service change went rerouted to I-105 Fwy instead of Avalon Blvd via Avalon Green (C Line Station).

10. In June 2024 (ongoing), Line 267 will be served for an extension to Allen Ave and New York Drive to discontinue Line 686. Line 268 will be reinstated to the Sierra Madre area due to passenger demand which is a good thing as previously on Baldwin Ave and Sierra Madre Blvd in both directions but it does not go to Michillinda Avenue anymore so it goes to Sierra Madre Villa Ave instead. Meanwhile, Line 268 is currently served on Foothill Blvd by June 2021 service changes are truncated at Sierra Madre Villa Station instead of going to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. However, Line 268 was rerouted from Ramona Blvd to Valley Blvd instead of Ramona and Tyler in both directions.  Line 76 was rerouted directly on Main And Alameda in both directions instead of Vignes St, Cesar E. Chavez Ave, and Spring Street in both directions but Line 76 westbound from Main St, College St, and Alameda Street is no longer to serve as Chinatown Station but basically, it goes rerouted directly on Main St and Alameda St in both directions to serve Little Tokyo Blue & Gold (A & E Line) Stations.  Line 217 will be extended to Eagle Rock but it will be gathered with Line 180 along the way for duplicate service areas of Los Feliz Blvd.

Currently on the LACMTA update: 3 Rapid bus lines (720, 754, and 761) and many bus lines (local and express 400/500 series including 900 letter series) are active.

That's all for the updates keep in mind the service change history. I will keep this Los Angeles MTA topic updated on the service changes.
