They were originally ordered by [[Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority|WMATA]] of Washington, D.C, and destined to become WMATA buses, but funding cutbacks forced them to cut a number of them off their order. Mississauga Transit wanted high floor buses, but the Ontario government would only chip in if low floors were purchased. Due to [[Orion Bus Industries|Orion]] being stuck with the several partially-completed buses, they offered them at a reduced price, and Mississauga was able to purchase them without provincial funding.
These buses were the last high floor buses in the fleet, and retirement began in late 2011. On December 1, 2011, a ceremony was held at [[MiWay City Centre Transit Terminal|City Centre Terminal]] to signify the transition of the fleet to fully low floor buses. 9728 entered the terminal on route [[MiWay route 53 'Kennedy'|53]], and was replaced by 1106, signaling a fully low-floor fleet.

Mississauga Transit 9701-9735 were Orion 05.501 buses built in 1997. They replaced various GM and Flyer buses built in the 1970s and 80s.

These buses were the last high floor buses in the fleet, and retirement began in late 2011. On December 1, 2011, a ceremony was held at City Centre Terminal to signify the transition of the fleet to fully low floor buses. 9728 entered the terminal on route 53, and was replaced by 1106, signaling a fully low-floor fleet.
