History

Order

The order was placed with Daimler in July 2009 using a $46 million federal stimulus grant awarded as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Part of the $45.7 million contract allows for options of over 400 more buses over five years. This followed a demonstration of an Orion VII hybrid (PT2) in March 2010.

The first of the production units began arriving in early 2011 and went into service in May. Production units use padded 4ONE Aries seats for 35 passengers upholstered in Morbern Vogue Azure vinyl with low back seats at the rear and perimeter areas. The walls were tan and the passenger windows were provided by Hehr. Walls are in grey with the lower walls in a lighter grey. They also used the now standard Stormtite passenger windows.

Prototype

The prototype, 7000, was completed in the spring of 2010 and underwent testing with Orion. It was delivered to King County in June and continued testing with them. 7000 featured high backed 4ONE Meridian seats instead of the Aries seats that production units received.

After testing and training was complete, 7000 was sold to BAE Systems for use as an engineering bus.
