Pierce County Public Transportation Benefit Area Corporation or Pierce Transit provides public transit service in Tacoma and Pierce County, Washington.

History

Prior to 1980, the operator was Tacoma Transit System.

Bus Routes

Pierce Transit has 32 fixed-route bus routes. To see a full list of the agency's routes, including all current and suspended routes, as well as many of the agency's deleted routes, see List of Pierce Transit Bus Routes.

Pierce Transit's service area includes Tacoma, Lakewood, Puyallup, Gig Harbor, University Place, Spanaway, Parkland, Steilacoom, Fife, Milton, Edgewood, Fircrest, Auburn, Federal Way as well as some unincorporated areas of Pierce County.

The agency's core routes, numbered 1-4, operate every 30 minutes or better on weekdays, and make up the backbone of the transit network. Routes numbered in the 10s, 20s and 40s mainly serve the city of Tacoma, with most of these routes starting or ending at 10th & Commerce Transit Center. Routes numbered in the 50s start or end at Tacoma Mall Transit Center, and connect Tacoma mall with a variety of destinations.

Routes numbered in the 100s serve the Gig Harbor area. Routes numbered in the 200s serve Lakewood, and all start or end at Lakewood Transit Center. Most of the 400 series routes serve Puyallup Station and the city of Puyallup, with the exception of the 497, which operates as an express between Auburn and Lakeland Hills. Routes 500 and 501 Fife and Federal Way.

Pierce Transit also operates 12 bus routes on behalf of Sound Transit, which offer express service in Pierce and King Counties. The agency also operates SHUTTLE paratransit services, and three on-demand Runner routes.

Most of the Pierce Transit fixed-route network operates 7 days a week, with the exception of three peak-hour express buses, one weekday-only bus route and one bus route that does not operate on Sundays.

Two of the Pierce Transit routes are summer seasonal, and mainly serve popular tourist and vacation destinations in the area.

Currently, three of Pierce Transit's routes are suspended due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and bus operator shortage.
