July 30 (Bloomberg) -- Denver International Airport plans to spend $1.2 billion over the next seven years on an automated baggage system, 10 jet gates and other improvements that will be financed with bonds, the Denver Post said, citing a prospectus.

Other improvements in the airport's largest construction program since its 1995 opening include a new terminal for as many as 23 commuter planes, a rail station and a covered parking garage, the newspaper reported.

The airport plans to sell $600 million in bonds next month to pay for as much as $450 million in construction through 2008 and to refinance $150 million in existing debt, the Post said. It expects to issue as much as $722 million in additional bonds for projects after 2008.

The airport scrapped its original automated baggage system and returned to traditional tug-and-cart hauling after problems with the new system contributed to a 16-month delay in opening the airport, the newspaper said.

Good thing that DEN has a LOT of room to expand, being in the middle of nowhere. I wonder if there's any news on any non-stop service to Asia, though. I am guessing that DEN-NRT non-stop may be feasible, since both are large UA hubs.
