Front Landing Gear Collapses On JAZZ Jet Arriving At Pearson International

Sunday May 20, 2007

The front landing gear has collapsed on a jet arriving at Pearson International Airport from Moncton, New Brunswick. Airport authorities say there were 37 passengers plus the crew aboard when the Air Canada JAZZ jet touched down on runway 6. There are no injuries reported.

The jet is now parked on a nearby taxiway. Both the runway and the taxiway are closed, pending an investigation by the Transportation Safety Board.

I think it might be possible that the Captain or the First Officer hit the knob to retract the landing gears instead of the flaps.

Landing gears do not retract while on the ground because there is a mechanism that prevents it from happening (squat switch on undercarriage detects if the aircraft is on the ground or not), and it is almost impossible to mistake the landing gear knob for the flaps control.
