Mississauga Transit 9801-9842
Mississauga Transit 9801-9842 were Orion 06.501 buses built in 1997.
Like many Ontario Transit systems, Mississauga Transit encountered major delays in receiving the Orion VI buses. The order was also originally for CNG buses, but later changed to diesel buses.
In July 1993, a tender was issued for the supply of up to 14 40' low floor CNG buses. Ontario Bus Industries was the only one to respond to the tender at a cost of $4,476,206.00, and they were awarded the contract for 12 buses at a cost of approximately $3.8 million. In June 1995, the order was expanded from 12 to 77 CNG buses.
In April 1996, Mississauga Transit decided to abandon the purchase of CNG buses, and continue purchasing diesel buses. The order for 77 Orion VI CNG buses was changed to diesel buses, and expanded to 89 buses.
In August 1996, due to foreseen delivery delays of the Orion VI buses, the order was reduced to 42 diesel buses.
Delivery of the buses began in mid-1997. They were the first 40 foot low floor buses to be operated by Mississauga Transit.
As Mississauga Transit at the time had a 12 year service life for 40' buses, retirement of these buses began in October 2010.
Following retirement, Eastway Refurbishing purchased 36 of these buses, with plans to refurbish 30 units. Eastway partnered with Corrections Canada where inmates are trained to perform the work on the buses. The buses are available with features such as a refurbished powertrain, new Recaro driver's seat, new interior, LED lighting, and LED destination sign. The buses were leased or purchased by several transit agencies.
