The first order of CNG buses for Foothill Transit was announced when Foothill executives approved a contract for 66 buses from Orion Bus Industries on October 27th, 2000, for slated delivery in early 2002; the buses however were built in spring-summer 2002 with delivery commencing in July-August 2002, enough to replace all 1988 Gillig Phantoms and some of the 1989 units as well.<ref>[https://web.archive.org/web/20021220070004/http://foothilltransit.org/news/pr/cng10312000.html Foothill Transit October 31, 2000 Press Release]</ref> Development work on a second agency-operated yard in Irwindale began in late August 2001 to replace the leased area in El Monte that was contracted by Laidlaw Transit; the new yard that opened in October 2002 would accommodate a natural gas refueling station.<ref>[https://web.archive.org/web/20021220073408/http://foothilltransit.org/news/pr/irwindalegb08302001.html Foothill Transit August 30, 2001 Press Release]</ref> The first Orion CNG buses alongside the refueling station were showcased at the Pomona facility at the end of July 2002. This series featured high-back padded reclining seats, reading lights, bicycle and luggage racks, intended for use on the Commuter Express routes (493, 497, 498, 499, and 699) alongside the school trippers  (853/854 and 855). The first units were replaced by the 2014-2015 NABI 42-BRT CNG buses ([[Foothill Transit F2200-F2229|F2200-F2229]] and [[Foothill Transit F2300-F2329|F2300-F2329]]); during the same year when the first Orion CNG buses retired, 21 units from this series were bought by [[Nassau Inter-County Express]], reversing an earlier stance about selling their buses only within Los Angeles County, as demonstrated with their old 1994-1995 Gillig Phantom diesels. The remaining units from this fleet were removed by the 2015-2016 New Flyer XN40 buses.

History

The first order of CNG buses for Foothill Transit was announced when Foothill executives approved a contract for 66 buses from Orion Bus Industries on October 27th, 2000, for slated delivery in early 2002; the buses however were built in spring-summer 2002 with delivery commencing in July-August 2002, enough to replace all 1988 Gillig Phantoms and some of the 1989 units as well.[1] Development work on a second agency-operated yard in Irwindale began in late August 2001 to replace the leased area in El Monte that was contracted by Laidlaw Transit; the new yard that opened in October 2002 would accommodate a natural gas refueling station.[2] The first Orion CNG buses alongside the refueling station were showcased at the Pomona facility at the end of July 2002. The dedicated fueling area was made and operated by ENRG in Seal Beach, California for $2.5 million; at that time, it was the second-largest natural gas refueling outlet made by them out of 90 others nationwide. Each unit had a cost of about $310,000 with the funding paid by the FTA alongside a one-time local grant.[3]

This series featured high-back padded reclining seats, reading lights, bicycle and luggage racks, intended for use on the Commuter Express routes (493, 497, 498, 499, and 699) alongside the school trippers (853/854 and 855). The buses began service in the early morning hours of July 15, 2002 on line 699.[4]

The first units were replaced by the 2014-2015 NABI 42-BRT CNG buses (F2200-F2229 and F2300-F2329); during the same year when the first Orion CNG buses retired, 21 units from this series were bought by Nassau Inter-County Express, reversing an earlier stance about selling their buses only within Los Angeles County, as demonstrated with their old 1994-1995 Gillig Phantom diesels. The remaining units from this fleet were removed by the 2015-2016 New Flyer XN40 buses.
