Foothill Transit is a transportation agency encompassing 21 cities in the San Gabriel and Pomona valleys to the east and northeast of the city of Los Angeles.

History

Operations began in December 1988. Foothill Transit's current routes originally belonged to the Southern California Rapid Transit District (SCRTD, which was the predecessor to the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority) but were split off from the larger agency due to the SCRTD cutting back heavily on bus service in the region.

Routes

Lines and Schedules

Foothill Transit operates a number of local and express bus routes, as well as a bus rapid transit (BRT) line named the "Silver Streak." This line connects downtown Los Angeles to the city of Montclair via the El Monte Busway, a part of I-10. The Silver Streak generally uses NABI 60-BRT vehicles, although NABI 42-BRTs are used during late nights, early mornings, and in peak hours.

Roster

Active

Foothill's fleet consists of a mixture of various NABI, New Flyer, and Proterra vehicles. Foothill began purchasing CNG buses in 2002 and has almost exclusively purchased CNG buses ever since. Foothill has had a 100 percent Clean Air fleet since 2013, with the retirement of the diesel Gillig Low Floor buses. Foothill aims to have a 100 percent electric bus fleet by 2030.

As Foothill Transit tends to retire buses at 12 years of age (the federally-specified minimum), its buses often are sold to other agencies which continue to operate them. Notable operators of ex-Foothill Transit buses include Nassau Inter-County Express in New York, Valley Metro in Phoenix, the LACMTA, Glendale Beeline and others.

Most newer Foothill Transit buses feature high-back reclining seats with overhead luggage racks or high-back cushioned seats. All newer buses also feature high visibility TwinVision white LED destination signs while older buses feature multicolor headsigns.
