Foothill Transit

Foothill Transit (with operations beginning December, 1988) is a transportation agency encompassing 21 cities in the San Gabriel and Pomona valleys to the east and northeast of the city of Los Angeles. Foothill Transit's current routes originally belonged to the Southern California Regional Transit District (SCRTD, which was the predecessor to the LACMTA) but were split off from the larger agency due to the SCRTD cutting back heavily on bus service on the region.

Foothill Transit is currently operated under contract by First Transit and MV Transportation. The upper-level management is contracted out to Veolia. Foothill's fleet consists of a mixture of various Gillig, NABI, and Orion vehicles. Foothill began purchasing CNG buses in 2002 and has exclusively purchased CNG buses ever since. Foothill aims to have a 100 percent CNG fleet by 2011, with the retirement of the diesel Gillig Advantages.

As Foothill Transit tends to retire buses at 12 years of age (the federally-specified minimum), its buses often are sold to other agencies which continue to operate them. Notable operators of ex-Foothill Transit buses include Valley Metro in Phoenix, the LACMTA, Glendale Beeline and others.

Foothill Transit operates a number of local and express bus routes, as well as a new bus rapid transit line named the "Silver Streak." This line connects downtown Los Angeles to the city of Montclair via the El Monte Busway, a part of I-10. The Silver Streak generally uses NABI 60-BRT vehicles, although NABI 40-LFWs and 42-BRTs are used during late nights, early mornings, and weekends.
