History

In October 1999, Foothill Transit received a grant of $1.75 million from the FTA to buy 88 replacement and expansion buses alongside 4 hybrid-electric prototypes, with the former being 29-foot and 40-foot Gillig low-floor buses; however, the hybrid vehicles were rejected, with two of them being bought by Torrance Transit.[1] At that time, its fleet consisted of 259 buses (later 314 buses in May 2010), of which 1/3 of them (all 1987 Gillig Phantom buses alongside some of the 1988-1989 units) were replaced with this order. The first units were delivered in late February 2000 and then entered service about 4-5 months later.[2][3]

The buses featured new farebox machines to automatically accept a larger variety of fare media. These were the first low floor buses in the Foothill Transit fleet; a slightly updated variant of the classic "Foothill peaks" livery was made for this series to designate their low-floor configuration.

The entire series was replaced by the 2010-2013 NABI 42-BRT CNG buses. They were the last active diesel-powered buses to remain in the fleet.
