If so, you will find old OC Transpo maps in the Ottawa Room at the main branch of the public library, at Metcalfe Street and Laurier Avenue West. They have a few maps which are not available on Carleton's website, including January 1978, September 1980, June 1981, and June 1982. They also have OTC and OC Transpo annual reports to fill in some of the gaps during the missing years. I have a large collection of OC Transpo maps myself, including every map since 1988, but there are some maps I would really like to have access to: anything before 1948, 1957, January 1959 before the OTC began dismantling the streetcar network, May 1959 just after all the streetcars had been abandoned, August 1972 just after the OTC became OC Transpo, 1975, 1977, and December 1983 when the Transitway first opened. I've studied the other maps and I was surprised just how far back some bus routes go. Something that will help direct your research is knowing that there have been three system-wide route renumberings, in 1983, 1985/1986, and 2017/2018. The 1983 renumbering had not yet been completed when the 1985 renumbering began, so that is why some route numbers changed twice and others only once. The OTC first used route numbers in September 1959, and routes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 were used for over fifty years until route 3 was cancelled in 2011. Bus routes were identified by name before 1959, such as Overbrook or Westboro. The following are former OTC routes that are still operating today, along with their previous route numbers: 4: Bronson Trolleybus between 1951 and 1959, E Streetcar between 1931 and 1951, originally dates back to 1891. 5: Hull-Riverdale bus between 1954 and 1959, Elgin-Ottawa East bus between 1939 and 1954. 6: Route 1 between 1959 and 2017. 7: Route 1A between 1959 and 1974, B Streetcar between 1931 and 1959, originally dates back to 1891. 11: Route 2 between 1959 and 2017, S Streetcar between 1931 and 1959, originally dates back to 1895. 14: Route 41 between 1959 and 1986. 16: Route 52 between 1959 and 1985. 18: Route 51 between 1959 and 1986. 49: Route 149 between 1983 and 2017, route 85 between 1963 and 1983. 56: Route 6 between 1959 and 2017, Crosstown bus between 1920s and 1959. 86: Route 71 between 1963 and 1986. I was actually planning on doing a similar project once the LRT system was up and running and the route changes had settled down, using the various books and system maps I can access. tomsbuspage Posted March 7, 2018 Report Share Posted March 7, 2018 The project I am planning on doing will be something similar to my "Tribute to Route 3" that I wrote several years ago, though probably without so much written detail as I am planning on using screenshots of OER, OTC and OC Transpo system maps. The initial plan is to cover the OTC routes and go forward, emphasising routes still in service after the Confederation Line opens, then cover the current routes and go back, then I would fill in the middle. I will also make note of the route number changes in the early 1980s, mid-1980s and late 2010s (e.g. routes 62-->8-->44 and 78-->118-->88). It'll be a huge job but I hope it will be worth it! Just wondering.... when were the directions of one-way streets in Centretown reversed in order to accommodate new ramps to and from the Queensway? GeoOttawa has aerial photos from 1958 and 1965, but those are only well before or after Queensway construction there was completed. The Geographic, Statistical and Government Information Centre on the third floor of the Morisset Library at Ottawa U. has a wealth of old Ottawa maps and aerial photos, including NCC, topographic and retail street maps from when the Queensway was being built.
