The VIA Rail Ottawa-Montreal-Quebec line is a Corridor route operated by VIA Rail Canada between Ottawa, ON and Quebec City, QC, via Montreal QC.

Services

This route has 3 types of services:

  • Ottawa - Montreal Gare Centrale (1 per day)
  • Ottawa - Montreal Gare Centrale - Quebec City Gare du Palais (Variable; up to 3 per day)
  • Montreal Gare Centrale - Quebec City Gare du Palais (1 per day)

Trains use numbers in the 20s, 30, 620s, and 630s.

Since Montreal Gare Centrale is effectively a terminus station, Ottawa-Montreal-Quebec services are either double-ended trains, or alternatively, perform a wye movement upon departing Montreal.

History

Service on the Corridor between Quebec City and Windsor have existed early on, since before Confederation, in the form of a Grand Trunk Railway line between Quebec City and Windsor (continuing to Detroit and Chicago). By 1919 the GTR had been absorbed by Canadian National, which still owns the rails. The route of the Corridor has remained the same since the GTR's line was built.

Between 1976 and 1978, operations and rolling stock were transferred from Canadian National to VIA Rail Canada. The Alexandria Subdivision (between Coteau, QC and Ottawa, ON) is now also owned by VIA.

In the mid-2010s, one pair of Montreal-Quebec trains per day were extended to serve Ottawa. Over the years, more runs would be extended in this manner, with the Ottawa-Montreal and Montreal-Quebec services unified as one by the end of the 2010's.

Rolling Stock

Passenger cars

The Ottawa-Montreal-Quebec trains use Siemens Venture trainsets, as well as one 'Renaissance' trainset, one of only two routes that use this type of rolling (the other being the long-distance Ocean). The Venture trainsets made their system debut on this route in October 2022, and completely replaced the LRC and HEP2 cars on this route by April 2024.

Venture trains are 5 cars long, formed with 2 business cars, 2 economy cars, and 1 economy cab car. Renaissance trains are 7 cars long and consist of a baggage car, two business class coaches, one lounge car, and 3 economy class coaches.

Motive Power

Trains using Renaissance rolling stock are powered by either the GE P42DC and GMD F40PH-3D. Venture trainsets are powered by Siemens SCV-42 locomotives.
