History

Orion I #9001 at 404 Town Centre on route 58A.

In 2004, YRT started expanding service to smaller communities that did not yet have access to public transit other than GO Transit. Before, it's main focus was maintaining and increasing service operated by the former agencies it had acquired, and communities that did not have service before amalgamation largely went unnoticed. Sharon, a small community a few kilometres north of Newmarket, needed service.

  • September 5, 2004 - YRT decided to implement a new route to serve Sharon and replace routes 55A and 57 which serve the community. Route 58 operated from 404 Town Centre north on Leslie and looping via Farr Avenue, Donlands Avenue, Mt. Albert Road, Howard Avenue and Colonel Wayling Boulevard.
  • November 7, 2004 - Branch 58A is introduced, providing additional rush hour service in Newmarket, operating from Stonehaven Avenue to Ringwell Drive, south of Green Lane. Route 58 begins to service East Gwillimbury GO Station for train connections only.
  • March 27, 2005 - Route 58A was discontinued, but at the same time added special trips to Newmarket High School on Mulock Drive.
  • April 30, 2006 - Another small community in Northern York Region was also asking for service. Mount Albert, a community located east of Highway 48 on Mount Albert Road, was isolated having no YRT or GO Transit connections. Route 58 was extended east along Mount Albert Road to serve Mount Albert. The extended branch was numbered route 58A, and full service was operated. Extra peak buses operated along route 58, providing extra service to Sharon.
  • September 5, 2010 - To prevent confusion, the 'North' suffix of Leslie was removed from route signs.
  • December 2012 - Routes 58 and 58A were declared fully accessible.
  • April 21, 2013 - The 2013 Annual Service Plan had route 58 discontinued and rush hour route 58A frequency improved to every 70 minutes and improved midday frequency. Instead, on this date, both branches and their routings were merged to create a single branch, 58, and the route being renamed from "Leslie/Leslie via Mount Albert" to "Mount Albert". Most service is maintained except for service to along streets within the Sharon community which is discontinued due to low ridership. Two weekday late-evening trips (the 10:20 pm northbound trip and 10:45pm southbound route 58A trips) were replaced by Dial-a-Ride service.
  • April 20, 2014 - As proposed in the 2014 Annual Service Plan, new Saturday Dial-a-Ride service is introduced on this route operating between 404 Town Centre and the Mount Albert community with hourly service between 8:00am and 8:00pm
  • July 2, 2017 - As part of the 2017 Annual Service Plan, a number of changes were implemented to route 58. Rush hour service is extended to serve the new Sharon subdivision along Murrell Boulevard between Green Lane East and Mount Albert Road. Off-peak service continues to operate along Leslie Street. Also, service in Mount Albert is expanded to fully serve King Street. Buses now loop counterclockwise via Mount Albert Road, Ninth Line, and King Street.
  • August 1, 2017 - Dial-a-Ride service on the route is separated into its own distinct service and is now known as Dial-a-Ride Mount Albert.
  • September 1, 2019 - Service is reduced to operate during weekday rush hours only. All weekday off-peak service is replaced with the new Mobility On-Request Mount Albert route.
  • April 5, 2020 - Route 58 is temporarily suspended due to low ridership during the pandemic. Service at all times is replaced with the Mobility On-Request Mount Albert.
  • September 3, 2023 - Route will not return to service and is permanently discontinued. Service will be redistributed to other routes with growing traveler demand.

Vehicles

Route 58 saw a mix of 30ft service provided by E-Z Rider II BRT/MAX and 40ft service provided by New Flyer D40LF.
