Route 522 mainly serves Church Street, Bullock Drive, Austin Drive, Highway 7 between Main Street Markham and Ninth Line, and Kennedy Road between Austin Drive and 14th Avenue.

The route serves Markham-Stouffville Hospital, Markham Village, Centennial Community Centre, Markville Mall, Old Unionville, and Hagerman's Corners.

The route connects with Viva Purple and Viva Green at stops along Highway 7 east of Kennedy Road.

History

YRT operated an unnumbered Markham Connector between The Shoppes at 404 and Steeles and Markham-Stouffville Hospital, connecting various retirement homes, shopping plazas and the hospital. The connector required pre-booking but had a set schedule, and passengers must also be Mobility Plus eligible.

• October 29, 2006 - YRT decided to turn the connector into a full Community Bus route, with the Newmarket bus proving to be a success. The section west of Kennedy was cut, to be provided by Mobility Plus, while the section on and east of Kennedy was turned into a Community Bus route, with fixed schedule, regular fare and no pre-booking required. Although the normal numbering scheme for specials in the Markham area is x0x, route 522 was numbered right after the Newmarket buses (520 and 521), in the Newmarket numbering (x2x).

• 2007 - 2007 proved to be a successful year for route 522, after transferring to full community service, route ridership increased by 771.3%.

• June 28, 2009 - Route is restructured to serve new locations within the Town of Markham. New locations served include 17/100 Anna Russell Way, 22/55 Austin Drive, 2 Raymerville Drive (Fridays only), No Frills Supermarket (Highway 7/Galsworthy Drive), Ashgrove Medical Centre, and the medical centre at 122 Cornell Park Avenue. Service between McCowan Road and Main Street Markham is modified to use Highway 7 instead of Bullock Drive. New service added on Main Street Unionville between Unionville Gate and Euclid Street, Austin Drive between Kennedy Road and McCowan Road, and on Cornell Park Avenue. Between Main Street Markham and Ninth Line, eastbound buses use Highway 7 and westbound buses use Church Street/George Street/Robinson Street.

• July 3, 2011 - New service introduced to Tony Wong Place. Westbound buses divert via west on Duffield Drive, and south and east on Deverill Court to serve the apartment building.

• July 1, 2012 - In order to cut on fuel costs, operations were transferred from Southwest Division to Southeast Division. Service along Church Street, and to 20/22 Water Street and Thomson Court is temporarily suspended in order to minimize delays caused by construction along Main Street Markham.

• November 13, 2012 - With the completion of construction, regular weekday and Saturday service along Main Street Markham and Church Street is restored.

• July 28, 2013 - Monday-Saturday service now offered to 2 Raymerville Drive (Hampton Green).

• February 23, 2014 - Service is extended within the Markville Mall grounds to serve Entrances 7 and 11. Eastbound routing is adjusted to serve Hampton Green prior to serving the Markham Food Bank and Loblaws. Westbound routing is adjusted to operate via north on Laidlaw boulevard and west on Bullock Drive to improve operations.

• June 28, 2015 - Service is removed from McCowan Road, Heritage Road, and Highway 7 west of Laidlaw Boulevard, and instead operate both ways via Laidlaw Boulevard and Bullock Drive. The routing is revised to operate via Kennedy Road, Enterprise Boulevard, Rivis Road, and YMCA Boulevard instead of Main Street Unionville south on Highway 7 to provide service to the Peachtree Shopping Centre and the T&T Supermarket.

• June 30, 2019 - Saturday service is discontinued. Service along YMCA Boulevard, Rivis Road, Enterprise Boulevard, and Unionville Gate is removed. Route is renamed from "Markham Community Bus" to "Markham Local".

• September 4, 2022 - With the opening of the Cornell Terminal, the routing is modified to directly serve the terminal.

• April 30, 2023 - The eastern terminus is shifted from Markham-Stouffville Hospital to Cornell Terminal.

Vehicles

When this route was operated by Mobility Plus, ELF and E-Z Rider II MAX were the common buses on the route. With the transfer from Southwest to Southeast Division in July 2012, this route is operated exclusively by ElDorado buses of all kinds.
