Columbia is a SkyTrain station in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Station Details

Located along Columbia Street, the station provides access to numerous nearby businesses and residential areas. The station served as the eastern terminus of the Expo Line from 1989 to 1990. During planning and construction, the station was known as Fourth Street.

Following the completion of the Millennium Line in 2002, Columbia became a major transferring point between Expo and Millennium line trains. However, the station was not designed to be a transfer hub. Due to its limiting design, overcrowding in the station's corridors and on the platforms are a daily occurrence during peak hours. Passengers transferring from the inbound platform to the outbound platform are required to descend to the mezzanine level and then back up a flight of 36 stairs or take an elevator if disembarking from the western end of the station[1]. Alternatively, passengers disembarking from the eastern end of the station are required to walk up a flight of narrow stairs to the Fourth Street concourse and back down again to the platform level. This remains to be a problem for passenger convenience despite the Millennium Line no longer serving Columbia as passengers still transfer between Waterfront, King George, and Production Way–University trains.

The only accessible entrance at Columbia Station is the Columbia Street entrance, which requires passengers to cut through a mall. However, the station and mall do not line up as the mall is located half a level above the station. The mall provides a wheelchair lift at the entrance to accommodate passengers. However, the lift often has reliability issues. The wheelchair lift is unique as Columbia Station is the only station on the system to have a wheelchair lift, despite it being privately owned and operated.

Bus Routes

Prior to the completion of the Millennium Line, Columbia was a secondary connecting point for bus services bound for the Tri-Cities. After 2002, those services moved to Braid and Lougheed. Today, Columbia provides services to local Community Shuttle services.

Bays 1 and 2 are on Columbia Street and Bay 3 is on Fourth Street.
