Wilkes-Barre Transit Corporation
The Wilkes-Barre Transit Corporation (also known by the shortened "Wilkes-Barre Transit"), is a former public transit provider for the city of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Services began December 18, 1939 and ended in 1974, when Wilkes-Barre Transit surrendered its assets to the Luzerne County Transportation Authority.
History
Timeline of important events
- 1939: Wilkes-Barre Transit Corporation begins services in Wilke-Barre, PA on December 18.
- 1958: Wilkes-Barre Transit Corporation sold, and becomes a subsidiary to American Transportation Enterprises (ATE) on October 17.
- 1974: On February 22, operations were surrendered to Luzerne County Transportation Authority. At the time of the transfer, Wilkes-Barre Transit accounted for approximately eighty percent of traffic on local transit buses, while while the White Transit Company (Pennsylvania) accounted for the other twenty percent. The White Transit Company (Pennsylvania) followed with their transfer on July 31.
