Route Details

This is an east-west route running in Richmond connecting Steveston and Richmond–Brighouse Station, running primarily along No. 1 Road.

Eastbound trips depart Steveston Exchange from Chatham Street & 2nd Avenue heading east on Chatham, north on No. 1 Road, east on Westminster Highway, south on No. 3 Road to Richmond–Brighouse Station.

Westbound trips depart Richmond–Brighouse Station heading north on No. 3 Road, then west along Westminster Highway, south on No. 1 Road, west on Steveston Highway, south on 4th Avenue, east on Chatham Street to Steveston Exchange at Chatham & 3rd Avenue. Some trips bypass Steveston Highway and continue south on No. 1 Road, west on Chatham Street to Steveston Exchange at Chatham & 2nd Avenue.

History

• 1958 - Service introduced as 61 No. 1 Road, connecting Sexsmith Loop with Steveston via No. 1 Road
• July 1961 - Evening weekday service revised to extend from Sexsmith Loop to Downtown Vancouver and ran as part of the 60 Richmond Express to eliminate the need to transfer between local Richmond routes and the number 60 bus. Service revised to be interlined with the 62 No. 2 Road
• August 1977 - Route renumbered from 61 to 401 and routing revised to serve Richmond Centre and Sexsmith Loop only during AM peak hours; peak hour service extended to Vancouver
• May 1984 - Destination sign simplification: Service renamed from 401 No. One Road to 401 One Road/Vancouver
• December 1991 - Accessible service introduced on select trips
• April 1997 - Morning peak service revised to operate via Garden City Road and Capstan Way, serving the Sexsmith Park & Ride
• September 2000 - Operations transferred from Oakridge Transit Centre to Richmond Transit Centre
• August 2001 - Service to Vancouver discontinued following the introduction of the 98 B-Line to Richmond Centre and service extended east of Richmond Centre to replace the 408 Garden City/Richmond Exchange, providing crosstown service between Steveston Village and Ironwood with extended evening only service to Riverport; service change deferred from April due to transit strike. Ironwood service ran as 401 Garden City to Horseshoe Way and Riverport service as 401 Garden City to Riverport
• October 2001 - Late-night Owl service cancelled due to funding shortfall
• April 2002 - Service reduced to every 20 minutes during peak hours following the introduction of route 488 Garden City/Burrard Station to reduce service duplication. Discontinuation of two daily late-night trips running between Marpole and Richmond following due to improvements to nighttime service on the 98 B-Line
• August 2007 - Service rerouted to turn southbound from Cook Road onto No. 3 Road, Granville Avenue and then northbound along Minoru Boulevard before returning to its regular route on Westminster Highway during the construction of the Canada Line
• September 2009 - Service during peak periods improved to under ten minutes with the introduction of the Canada Line
• September 2016 - Westbound PM school special trip operations transferred to Hamilton Transit Centre
• May 2017 - Service proposed to be split into two routes: One portion between Steveston and Richmond–Brighouse and the second between Ironwood/Riverport and Richmond–Brighouse
• January 2018 - Discontinuation of a westbound PM school special trip operated by Hamilton Transit Centre
• September 2018 - Service between Richmond–Brighouse Station, Ironwood and Riverport Entertainment Complex discontinued and replaced by the 408 Brighouse Station/Ironwood/Riverport to improve speed and reliability.
• January 2022 - COVID-19 service adjustment: PM peak hour service reduced from every 12–15 minutes to every 15 minutes
• April 2024 - AM eastbound peak hour service between 6 and 7 a.m. reduced from every 13–15 minutes to every 15 minutes and increased from every 12–16 minutes to every 12 minutes between 7 and 8 a.m.
