BYD Auto introduced a battery-electric Type-A school bus in January 2022. It is available in lengths of 22.9, 24.5, and 26.7 feet. The bus uses lithium iron phosphate batteries and offers a range of 105 miles (initially advertised as 140 miles).[1] The bus can be charged with 110 kilowatt DC fast charging as well as 19.2 kilowatt single-phase AC charging.
The BYD Type A bus features vehicle-to-grid technology where the bus can provide extra power storage to school districts when it is not in service. Buses can be charged overnight when energy demand is low, and energy can be fed back into the grid when the bus is parked.
