York Region Transit 1080-1094
York Region Transit 1080-1094 are Nova Bus LFX buses built in 2010 and delivered between 2010 and 2011. These buses are the first production LFX units. They are also the first buses from Nova Bus to be bought by YRT. When delivered, these buses did not have fleet numbers applied. This wasn't done until late January 2011 just prior to the buses entering service.
In spring 2009, a request for proposals was issued for the procurement of up to 51 rapid transit vehicles over a five year term. The first year, 2010, would see 15 articulated low floor buses. Two manufacturers, Nova Bus and New Flyer, responded. Each model offered was looked at by YRT which included the visit of demonstration vehicles. Nova's bid was selected as they scored the highest technical score and offered the lowest price; a projection of $902,234 (plus GST) per vehicle. They were also the only manufacturer that met the 25% Canadian content requirement under the Province of Ontario's Canadian Content policy.
Satisfied with the Van Hools, YRT wanted the Novas to be similarly appointed. Some of the features desired were a smooth, quiet ride, advanced styling, advanced customer amenities such as comfortable seating and work tables, and advanced telematics. They were initially delivered with blue hubcaps covering the rims, but were since removed.
These buses run on Viva Blue and Viva Purple. They also enabled the first scheduled 60 foot service on Viva Purple by allowing some AG300s to be moved to York BRT's Vaughan garage. In January 2012, during the 2011/2012 strike, the Region transferred all of these buses to Southwest Division to expand capacity on route 99 Yonge South, which was severely overcrowded as it runs along the same corridor as Viva Blue. They were pressed into operation on January 13, and drivers were accompanied by safety officers and a driving instructor, as drivers received only brief training on the 60 foot buses.[1]
