The Volvo D13 is an inline, 13-litre diesel engine. It was introduced in Euro 3 trucks beginning in 2005, and in North American trucks beginning in 2007. Prevost began to offer the D13 engine in their coaches in 2008.
The D13 is available in ratings of between 335 and 500 horsepower. The engine features a variable geometry turbocharger, as well as Volvo's I-VEB engine brake. It is controlled by a brake stalk switch, allowing three engine brake increments. Common rail fuel injection uses 35,000 psi to facilitate a cleaner burn. Other features of the D13 include rigid deck cylinder head, camshaft damper, smart fan clutch, and exhaust gas re-circulation.
To meet EPA 2007 emission standards, the D13 uses cooled exhaust gas re-circulation (EGR) and a diesel particulate filter (DPF). To further reduce NOx emissions to meet EPA 2010 standards, the engine uses selective catalytic reduction (SCR). Volvo's SCR process also improves fuel economy and reduces emissions of CO2. The 2010 engine eliminates active regeneration of the DPF, saving additional fuel and requiring no action by the operator.
As of 2013, the EPA requires on-board diagnostics (OBD) on all diesel engines. This is intended to ensure engines remain under the current emissions levels. The 2014 D13 offers improved fuel efficiency with optimized and enhanced engine components. The updated engine features low-friction cylinder liners, a clutched air compressor, new seven-hole injector offering improved fuel atomization, and an improved crankcase ventilation system that filters more oil from blowby gases before they leave the engine.
Volvo began production of the 2017 D13 in the latter half of 2016. The updated engine features a new common-rail fuel system and a new wave piston with ridges to burn fuel more efficiently and cleanly. Volvo also introduced the D13TC, which uses turbo compounding technology. It uses a turbine to recover energy that is typically wasted through the exhaust and converts it into mechanical energy that is transferred back to the engine. The D13TC boasts up to a 6.5 percent improvement in fuel efficiency over the 2014 D13.
