Phibbs Exchange is a transit exchange operated by Coast Mountain Bus Company in Metro Vancouver, BC Canada. It is located on Main Street off the Ironworkers Memorial Second Narrows Bridge in the District of North Vancouver.

Exchange Details

Phibbs Exchange has 12 bus bays serviced by 13 routes running in North Vancouver, to Burnaby via east Vancouver and to downtown. Facilities include numerous covered passenger benches as well as a rest area for drivers.

As part of the Phibbs Exchange upgrade works, the original bus loop closed on July 24, 2023, and relocated to a temporary street-side configuration. Work is expected to be finished by summer 2024.

History

Phibbs Exchange opened on October 19, 1973 to accommodate the expansion of bus service into the eastern part of North Vancouver and the opening of the nearby Capilano College (now Capilano University).[1] Phibbs Exchange is named after Charles J.P. Phibbs, who once owned and operated a prominent milk ranch and mill within the area and served as Reeve of the Municipality of the District of North Vancouver in 1891 and 1892.[2]

In April of 2008, a new bus bay for Community Shuttles was created on the northern part of the bus island, increasing the number of bus bays at the exchange by one to 11. An additional bay was also added in April 2020.

Presently, the exchange serves approximately 15,700 passengers daily.

There was a park and ride facility with 40 spaces available[3] but closed in fall 2018 to make way for bus loop upgrades and nearby construction at Dollarton Highway and Main Street.[4]

In 2014, plans were made to redesign Phibbs Exchange to improve the customer experience and to facilitate future growth. However, there was no firm timeline on the project until an announcement in late 2018. Announced exchange upgrades included improved lighting, weather protection, and improved accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists. Work was expected to start in late 2018 and completion in spring 2020. However, commencement of work was delayed until November 2022. On May 22, 2023, work began inside the existing bus loop which involved the closure of Bay 4 and relocation of various buses to accommodate the construction of the new operator crew room. The north end of the bus loop closed on June 19 with some stops moved over to a temporary street exchange on Oxford Street and Orwell Street.

On July 24, 2023, the existing bus exchange closed and all stops were relocated to a temporary street exchange. The original date of the closure was for July 17.

Bus Routes

Due to Phibbs Exchange upgrade works, the exchange has been relocated to a temporary street-side configuration. Bays 1–3 are located on Main Street. Bays 4–6 and Bays 11 and 12 are located along Orwell Street and the bus only on-ramp. Bays 8–10 are located on Oxford Street.

To accommodate layover spaces for the street-side configuration, additional layover spaces are located on Harbour Avenue and at Riverside Drive & Front Street for the R2 Marine Drive RapidBus.
