Station Details

Located at the intersection of Main Street and Terminal Avenue, Main Street–Science World Station provides service to the False Creek area and connects passengers to long distance rail and bus services at Pacific Central Station

History

The station originally opened as Main Street in 1983. The station served as a 1km line of the ALRT demonstration line (before the SkyTrain name caught on) heading east on Terminal Avenue. The line was meant to give the public a chance to ride the SkyTrain for free as part of a demonstration period. The station was merged into the network when the Waterfront to New Westminster segment opened in 1985.

On September 21, 1990, the station name was changed to Main Street – Science World in reference to the nearby Science World (now called TELUS World of Science, but continues to be referred to as Science World). System maps and platform signage displayed Science World – Main Street. This was later changed to its current name, but the platform signage remained as Science World – Main Street until their removal in 2013.

As the oldest station on the system, a rebuild program was launched to improve station accessibility. The original station had two entrances: one on the west side of Main Street and the other on the east. The elevator was located in a poor location under the station adjacent to the west entrance. The east entrance lacked a station house and the station was only accessible by one narrow staircase. The station itself did not protect the platforms from the weather as the sides of the station lacked any structure besides a simple fence. Both entrances were not capable of having faregates installed. The upgrade works extended the eastern part of the station and expanded the west station house in addition to building an east station house. A secure bike parking, the first of its kind in the system, was added in the east station house. Design work was by VIA Architecture.

To minimize service disruptions, the station remained open during construction. The east side was closed first and was reopened after the completion of the station house. The west side was then immediately closed and demolished. To compensate the shorter platform, a special two car shuttle train, Train2Main, ran between Waterfront and Commercial–Broadway.

The upgrades were completed in 2015.
