Waterfront is an intermodal transit hub in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Services

Several TransLink services meet at Waterfront Station:

  • TransLink West Coast Express bullet-a.png West Coast Express – A commuter train service running between Waterfront and Mission City Station on weekdays. Early morning trips go to Waterfront and afternoon trips go to Mission City.
  • SeaBus SeaBus – A foot passenger ferry service connecting Waterfront with Lonsdale Quay in North Vancouver across the Burrard Inlet.

Other services at/near Waterfront Station:

  • Cruise Ship Terminal at Canada Place – The homeport for a majority of Alaska cruises.
  • Helijet – A helicopter airline connecting Vancouver Harbour with Victoria Harbour and Nanaimo Harbour. The Helijet Heliport is located near the SeaBus berths.
  • Vancouver Harbour Flight Centre Seaplane Terminal – Various float planes and services near Canada Place.

In addition, the West Coast Express office is located inside the station at 2nd-floor suite #295. The office is tasked with administrative duties as well as for customer service and inquiries.

Station Details

Located on West Cordova Street between Granville and Seymour streets, Waterfront is a major transit hub in the system and is close to nearby Gastown and Canada Place/Convention Centre, both within very close walking distance. The Expo Line, Canada Line, West Coast Express, and the SeaBus meet up at Waterfront, along with one RapidBus route and several other bus routes. In addition, out-of-station transfers include the Helijet port on W. Waterfront Road, the cruise ship terminal at Canada Place and seaplanes at Coal Harbour. The station also connects with Sinclair Centre and its underground connecting corridor to the station opened on February 20, 1986 and was closed briefly during Expo 86.[1]

Although the Expo Line platforms appear to be underground, they are at-grade. This illusion is created by the Cordova Street Extension and numerous buildings built above the platforms, tracks, and the Dunsmuir Tunnel portal west of the station.

One of two opening day commemorative plaques are on display in the north concourse (the other plaque is at New Westminster). Another plaque located in the north concourse is in recognition of Hon. Raymond Joseph Perrault, a federal senator who helped obtain funding to launch SkyTrain.

Waterfront Station is often mistaken to be owned by TransLink. TransLink only owns the platforms, corridors, and anything beyond faregates. The station structure itself and the floors above are owned by Cadillac Fairview.

Architecture

The station building was built in a neo-classical style and was designed by Montreal-based architecture firm Barott, Blackader and Webster.[2] In the main concourse area, paintings that depict various Canadian landscapes line the walls above the columns. The paintings were by Adelaide Langford and were completed in 1916.[3]

The SkyTrain portion of the station was designed by a joint venture between Allen Parker & Associates of Vancouver and Architektengruppen U-Bahn of Vienna.[4]

The Canada Line portion of the station was designed by VIA Architecture, with renovation work by Hywel Jones Architect.[5]

Public Art

As part of the Canada Line art program, there is constantly a rotation between various public art displays in the connecting corridor between the Canada Line platforms and the main station building. Presently, the piece on display is titled Forest Apparitions by Darcy Hennessy, which is a medium format photography series completed in 2019 and is the first instalment of four that offers visual representations of the energies that live in the natural world.[6]

Previous works on display at Waterfront were:

  • Bus Mail by Joi T. Arcand, which was on display on the Granville Street entrance and was an extension of the Capture Feature Exhibition[7]
  • By Any Other Name by Working Format was a partnership between Working Format Design & Typography and the Emily Carr Alumni Association, with partial funding by the City of Vancouver 125 grant, takes Vancouver's alternate names as a basis of each poster's design and creates visuals to represent the unique narratives hidden within these alternate Vancouver names[8]
  • Chasing the Clock by David Fok is a visualization of society's and an individual's enslavement to time and the clock[9]
  • Going Forward, Moving Backward by Paul Bucci[10]
  • Here Comes by Erdem Tasdelen, which borrows the titles of songs that begin with the phrase "Here Comes" with vibrant traffic of Waterfront Station[11]
  • INTERSECTIONS by The Platform Gallery was launched on February 1st, 2013 and celebrates unique features of seven locations in Vancouver. The work was in collaboration with seven local designers[12]
  • Luz=Luz Commercial by Claudio Rivera was part of a series of photo-performance pieces at Parisisen landmarks. The works were located at Waterfront, Vancouver City Centre, Yaletown–Roundhouse, and Broadway–City Hall[13]
  • Poser by Ho Tam, which was a series of photographs taken at the 2003 Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto[14]
  • Signs for a Meaningful Protest by Josephine Lee[15]
  • Teachings by Reese Muntean was a series of photographs showing the tools and technologies used in the processing and preserving of salmon and was a partnership between Muntean, Jordan Wilson, and the Musqueam Fisheries Commission[16]
  • TransAmericana 2012 by Claudio Rivera-Seguel[17]
  • Under Construction by Tamara Leigh was a series of black and white photographs of various tunnels and stations at different phases during the construction of the Canada Line.[18] This was the first public art piece on display at Waterfront
  • Untitled by Isabelle Pauwels[19]
  • Waterfront Station: Carpoolers by Alejandro Cartagena, which was a series of photographs taken from a bridge that ran across a highway between Nuevo Laredo and Texas, a known drug corridor between Mexico and the United States[20]

History

The station opened in 1914 as the third CP Rail station building, replacing a prior one built at roughly the same location. When SeaBus services started, a plan was made to make Waterfront Station into a downtown transit hub, moving all bus services to meet up at "Waterfront–Granville" station.

Initially, the station building was slated for demolition as part of the Project 200 development, which only saw the completion of Granville Square, which now sits west of the station. However, due to opposition to the Project 200 development, which involved the construction of waterfront freeways, in addition to the introduction of SeaBus service, the station building was saved from demolition and was renovated.[21]

The SkyTrain platforms opened on December 11, 1985 with additional entrances opening within the station and at Howe Street, Waterfront Centre, and Sinclair Centre, in addition to expanding the north concourse area at the foot of the pedestrian overpass connecting to the SeaBus terminal. One of three SkyTrain opening ceremonies took place at the Waterfront Station concourse area (with the other two at Metrotown and New Westminster).

West Coast Express services commenced in 1995, expanding to the CP Rail tracks below the station and parallel to the SkyTrain platforms.

In 2007, Waterfront was one of the first stations on the network to have digital passenger information and advertisement screens installed (the other being Metrotown).[22]

Canada Line services commenced on August 17, 2009, expanding the station with two new entrances and two new platforms underground.

Today, Waterfront Station is a major transit hub in the system and in Downtown Vancouver, serving as a terminus and connecting point for many transit services. Prior to the October 22, 2016 SkyTrain network changes, Waterfront was the meeting point of all SkyTrain lines.

In March 2017, work began on renovating the SeaBus terminal. Renovation works included the replacement of exterior metal cladding, roofing, and windows, in addition to renovations to the washrooms. On May 4, 2018, TransLink announced additional improvements to the terminal. The additional improvements announced addressed the need for a seismic upgrade and replacements of all escalators and elevators, in addition to adding an additional elevator and staircase to improve passenger flow. As well, a new and proper entrance at Waterfront Road to replace the current side entrance. Work is scheduled to begin in late May and be completed within 15 months. The works are estimated to cost about $17 million.

As part of the Canada Line Escalator Enhancement Project, an additional escalator is being added between the Canada Line Cordova Street concourse and street level to address growing ridership and station congestion. Construction work was scheduled to begin in early 2019. Closure of the Cordova entrance was required for the installation of the escalator from October 15–18, 2019.

In April 2020, work began on replacing one of the two escalators at the Howe Street entrance and on May 11, work began to replace the escalators at the eastern end of the Expo Line platform. This resulted in restricted access to the main Cordova Street concourse from the Expo Line to elevator users only and passengers were directed to use the Howe Street exit and walk back around to the main station building. Access to the Expo Line by stairs and elevator from Cordova Street was not affected. Work is expected to be complete by fall 2020. On June 12, the eastern end of the Expo Line platform was completely closed to allow for the installation of heavy machinery as part of escalator replacement work. This resulted in the closure of elevator access to the Expo Line and a shuttle was implemented to go between the east parking lot next to the SeaBus terminal at Waterfront, Cordova Street & Granville Street at the 44 UBC stop, and at Burrard Station at Bay 1, running every 15 minutes daily between 5am and 10pm on weekdays and 6am to 10pm on weekends.[23] The eastern end reopened on June 29th.
