Surrey Central is a SkyTrain station in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Station Details

Located in the city centre of Surrey, Surrey Central provides connection to many local bus services connecting every compass of Surrey and beyond.

The station provides easy access to the North Surrey Recreation Centre, Surrey Centre Library, City Hall, Central City Mall, Simon Fraser University Surrey Campus, and Kwantlen Polytechnic University's Civic Plaza Campus.

Surrey Central is known to have one of the highest crime rates in the system, second to Commercial–Broadway.[1] Based on 2011 statistics, Surrey Central has the most cases of assaults in the system. However, increased patrols from members of the Metro Vancouver Transit Police, Coast Mountain Bus Company Transit Security, and Surrey RCMP serve as a crime deterrence.

The City of Surrey donated land for the construction of the station and the owners of Surrey Place Mall, now Central City, contributed $2.4 million to the construction of the station and guideway through its property.[2]

Public Art

There is a permanent public art display in the new north concourse's two-storey space titled The Sea Captain, a suspended Indigenous art piece by Marianne Nicolson.[3]

History

Prior to the SkyTrain station opening, the bus loop was known as Whalley Exchange (opened in May 1975 as part of the introduction of transit service in Surrey), only to be renamed and moved to its current location. In the past, buses loaded and unloaded along 135 Street (or what is now City Parkway). However, during SkyTrain construction, Whalley Exchange moved temporarily moved in March 1991 to 134A Street (now University Drive), 102 Avenue and 104 Avenue. Bays 1-3 were on 134A Street, 4 on 102 Avenue and 5 on 104 Avenue.[4]

The station opened in 1994 when the SkyTrain was extended to King George. Originally to be named 104 Avenue during the planning stage, the station received its current name after a naming contest. The station was also briefly known as Whalley Central.[5]

Surrey Central was the last station to have its original BC Transit style platform station identity signage replaced. Most Platform 2 signs were replaced in mid-January and by the end of the month, all signs on Platforms 1 and 2 were replaced. As of February 2019, BC Transit style directional signs remain installed.

Station Upgrades

The new north stationhouse which opened in early March 2019.

In March 2017, station upgrade works began at Surrey Central. The upgrade works include a new north stationhouse with an addition of two new entrances, improved station design, and new escalators and elevators improving accessibility and passenger flow. Minor demolition work of the existing emergency exit and excavations were part of the initial phase. The second phase of work which began in late 2017, included the construction of the stationhouse itself and the extension of the platform to connect with the new stationhouse.

The new expansion includes a new concourse, three escalators and staircases, and one elevator, including a permanent public art display. There are also provisions for future retail space in the new stationhouse. Work was completed in late February 2019. Tim Hortons claimed the retail space in May 2020, and the shop was opened in July 2020.

The Mcfarlane Biggar Architects + Designers firm based in Vancouver designed the new stationhouse.

Surrey Central is the last station to be upgraded as part of the Expo Line Upgrade Strategy.[6]
