Stadium–Chinatown is a SkyTrain station in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Station Details

Located adjacent and beneath the Dunsmuir Viaduct, Stadium–Chinatown Station provides access to the adjacent BC Place and Rogers Arena, in addition to Vancouver's Chinatown. The station opened in 1985 as Stadium. The "Chinatown" portion of the station name was added in 2004. [1]

Stadium–Chinatown Station is the only SkyTrain station to have a bilingual entrance sign.

Despite the station having three platforms, only two are used. The third side platform is used for train parking and may be open during special events or maintenance (as was the case in Spring 2019). During Expo 86, the third platform was used as a shuttle for those attending the Expo to access the Canadian Pavilion at Waterfront.

TransLink Lost Properties and Compass Customer Service Centre is located at Stadium–Chinatown Station. During the transit centennial in 1990, the Compass Customer Service Centre space was occupied by a transit history display.

When the station opened, there was an additional entrance going underneath Beatty Street. The entrance was closed shortly after the station opened and is now occupied by the Lost Properties Office. Portions of the passage is filled in with sand and topped with a concrete sidewalk. The Expo Boulevard entrance was originally an emergency exit stairwell. It opened as a new entrance in 1989.

The International Village entrance sign is the only sign on the SkyTrain system to have Chinese characters. The sign displays Stadium–Chinatown Station 體育館/華埠(唐人街).

In January 2017, the fencing dividing Platform 2 and Platform 3 was replaced with a permanent fixture, as well as with new station identity signage and line diagrams. Previously, metal barricades for crowd control were used. Prior to this minor installation work, Stadium–Chinatown was the only station remaining in the system to not have a permanent platform dividing fence as other stations, specifically along the Expo Line, had platform fencing installed in the early-2000s.

Platform 3 did not use the platform intrusion found at Expo Line stations between Waterfront and King George, which comprises of a system that detects intrusion based on the amount of weight being placed on metal grills. The system that was installed used on Platform 3 exclusively was an early version of laser detection now found at all stations built from 2002 onward. In late May 2018, this system was replaced with the traditional platform intrusion system based on weight.

Expo 86 Service

During Expo 86, an express shuttle service operated between the Canada Pavilion (now Canada Place) near Waterfront Station and the main fairgrounds along False Creek from Platform 3. Shuttle passengers entered the station via an overpass that stretched over Expo Boulevard that connected Platform 3 with the fairgrounds. The overpass was dismantled after Expo 86 and replaced with a set of emergency exit stairs.

Vancouver 2010 Service

Due to its proximity to BC Place and Canada Hockey Place, operations and passenger flow changed slightly at Stadium–Chinatown during the Olympic and Paralympic Games. For the duration of the games, station directional signage was temporarily replaced with Vancouver 2010 bilingual signage to direct passengers to the two venues located across the street from Stadium–Chinatown. The Keefer Street exit was closed for the duration of the games and Expo Boulevard was designated as exit only.
