Metrotown is a SkyTrain station in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Station Details

The station is located along Central Boulevard adjacent to Metropolis at Metrotown, the largest shopping centre in British Columbia. Metrotown Station serves the high density residential areas, offices, and numerous shopping centres adjacent to the station.

The length of Metrotown Station is approximately 208 metres, making it the longest station in the system. Previously, Lougheed Town Centre was the longest station at 180 metres in length.

Provisions have been set aside above the Central Boulevard entrance for a future pedestrian walkway, connecting Station Square and Metropolis at Metrotown.

At the Telford Avenue entrance, two plaques are mounted on one of the SkyTrain guideway supports. The first is a City of Burnaby Heritage Site plaque, acknowledging the history of the BC Electric Railway's Central Park Line and how the Expo Line and BC Parkway parallels its routing. The second plaque commemorates the commencement of work on the Burnaby portion of the Expo Line, revealed on August 26, 1983.

History

Since the station opened in 1985, the area around the station has transformed from an industrial area with low density residential areas to the town centre it is today, with the openings of Metrotown Centre in 1986, Station Square in 1988 and Eaton Centre in 1989.

The station site and sections of the Expo Line directly west and east of Metrotown was also the site of two stations on the BC Electric Railway Central Park Line, which the Expo Line follows and parallels in some portions between Nanaimo Station and New Westminster Station. Metrotown Station is located between the old McKay and West Burnaby stations.

The bus loop was temporarily moved east to accommodate Eaton Centre construction and it returned to its current location on August 2, 1988, following to completion of Eaton Centre-related construction work on the bus loop site.

When Eaton Centre opened in 1989, a pedestrian overpass connected the mall with the station, stretching over the bus loop and Central Boulevard. However, as this was a later addition, the bridge and the station did not line up, resulting in there being a few steps before the overpass reached the concourse. The overpass was partially demolished in late 2016.

From September to November in 2001, the bus loop was closed for extensive reconstruction and repaving. This resulted in all buses revised to terminate at Patterson Station and the establishment of a stop underneath the pedestrian overpass for the 110, 114, 115, 116, and 144 buses.

In 2007, Metrotown was one of the first stations on the network to have digital passenger information and advertisement screens installed (the other being Waterfront).

Station Upgrades

In 2015, upgrade works began on Metrotown Station to completely rebuild the entire station with new entrances, improved accessibility, and improved station structure. The station was not accessible due to the elevator entrance being demolished and rebuilt until new elevators opened in 2017. In 2016, the Metropolis at Metrotown and Central Boulevard entrances closed and portions of the new centre concourse entrance opened.

On March 24, 2017, the centre concourse and entrance opened, restoring accessibility to Metrotown Station. The accessible shuttle service between Royal Oak Station and Metrotown came to an end and HandyDART shuttle service between Metrotown and Patterson Station ran until March 31st. The temporary staircases and Compass Validators were subsequently removed. July 24 saw the opening of the McKay Avenue entrance and four new escalators. However, direct access to the crosswalk between the centre stationhouse and the main bus loop would not be available until September 3rd. Until then, pedestrians exiting here were forced to use the crosswalk at McKay Avenue. An additional set of stairs linking the platforms to the Central Boulevard entrance opened on the week of December 10, 2017.

The Telford Avenue entrance opened on March 19, 2018, adding an additional four escalators at Metrotown Station. The Telford Avenue escalators are about 33 ft. tall and are shorter than the escalators at the McKay Avenue entrance, which are 43 ft. in height. For both sets of escalators, the middle two are wider than the escalators on the far left and right.

Prior to March 16, 2018, bikes were not allowed at Metrotown Station due to safety reasons. However, as the upgrade works neared completion, the restriction was lifted, allowing bikes into Metrotown Station for the first time but restricted to only the Central Boulevard entrance.

The Bike Parkade opened on August 10, 2018 with a capacity for 26 bikes and includes electrical outlets for charging e-bikes. The opening of the Bike Parkade and the completion of nearby landscaping work nearby shortly afterwards concluded station upgrade works.

Overall station works and design were undertaken by VIA Architecture based in Vancouver.

Bus Routes

The bus loop is located directly north of the station across Central Boulevard. Throughout its history, the bus loop has moved twice to compensate for developments around the station. Once station upgrades are completed, most services in the bus loop will move to Central Boulevard directly below the station. Bays 1–8 are located in the loop while Bays 10–13 are located along Central Boulevard.
