Edmonds is a SkyTrain station in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Station Details

The station is located off Griffths Drive and 18th Avenue in the Edmonds area of Burnaby. Located directly east of the station is the Operations and Maintenance Centre for the Expo and Millennium lines. Edmonds Station provides access to nearby residential areas and in recent years there have been an increase of higher density residential developments.

As part of TransLink's Proximity Enabled Accessible Entrances project, proximity sensors were to be installed at all accessible faregates at Edmonds in 2017 as part of a trial before a system wide installation.

Edmonds Station is one of first two stations (the other being Lougheed Town Centre) to have its customer information displays upgraded. Work started in late 2018 and the new displays were activated on February 14, 2019.

History

Before Edmonds Station opened, buses terminated at Edmonds Loop at Kingsway and Edmonds, northeast of the station. In January 1986, buses moved to the current Edmonds Station bus loop and Edmonds Loop was subsequently closed.

In the past, there was a secondary entrance connecting the Waterfront platform to the bus loop but has since closed and is now an emergency exit. The two platforms are connected by an overpass that goes over the tracks. The station parallels the old BC Electric Railway Central Park Line right-of-way directly west of the station. The tracks were removed in 2016.

During the planning of SkyTrain in the early 1980s, the location of an Edmonds station was anticipated to be elevated at Rumble Street and 19th Avenue (now Griffiths Drive), due to its proximity to the heart of the Kingsway–Edmonds neighbourhood. However, to save construction costs, the station was built at-grade at its current location and by 1984, plans of a "Rumble Station" was abandoned completely. The reserved land plot remains empty to this day.
