Arbutus is a planned SkyTrain station in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Station Details

Arbutus Station is one of five planned stations along the Millennium Line's Broadway Subway extension. The station will be located at the northeast corner of W. Broadway & Arbutus Street between Arbutus Street and the Arbutus Greenway. Once complete, it will be the new western terminus of the Millennium Line.

Once the station is complete and after the appropriate bus network realignments, the 99 B-Line's new eastern terminus will be here. A bus loop will be included in the station's design to provide a direct connection to the University of British Columbia.

The design of Arbutus Station will make use of a light grey cladding with white underneath the canopy and extensive use of glass.[1]

While tunnel boring machines will be used for a significant portion of the overall Broadway Subway construction work, the bored tunnels will end at W. Broadway & Cypress Street, two blocks away from the station site. From Cypress to Arbutus, the tunnel will be excavated using mining equipment. There will also be the construction of an additional tunnel to accommodate tail tracks extending to almost Yew Street, also to be completed using mining equipment. All this work will be done in late 2023.[2]

The station is expected to open in 2025.

History

Various changes to traffic patterns took place in the fall of 2021 to relocate underground utilities and for excavation work.

While this will be the western terminus of the Millennium Line once completed, there are plans of extending the Millennium Line further to the University of British Columbia. However, this extension is still under consideration and planning and no funding has been committed. However, UBC said in April 2018 that it may consider paying for a portion of it and contributing land for stations. When an extension to UBC does happen, it will make the Millennium Line the longest rapid transit line in Canada at 43 kilometres in length.[3]

Controversy

The St. Augustine's school located at Arbutus Street & W. 7th Avenue – approximately one to two blocks from the station construction site – launched legal action in the B.C. Supreme Court over the impacts of the station construction, citing concern from both parents and the school for the safety of students. The private elementary school's petition sought to have the court make a number of orders to address safety and noise concerns, listing the Ministry of Transportation, the B.C. Transportation Financing Authority and the Broadway Subway Project Corp. as defendants.[4] It is alleged that the Ministry of Transportation consulted the wrong St. Augustine's school as the one listed by the Ministry of Transportation as a contact for a stakeholder review – as noted in documents obtained through a freedom of information request – is for the former principal of another St. Augustine's school located in Newfoundland, over 5,000 kilometres away from Arbutus Station.[5] The school is attempting to get the province to get safety measures implemented that were accidentally overlooked due to the mistake of contacting the wrong St. Augustine's school and to get the court to declare St. Augustine's a "key stakeholder" in the project due to its direct proximity to the construction.

Bus Routes

It is expected that bus routes currently passing through the station's proposed location will continue to service the area once the station is complete in 2025, including the 99 B-Line for a brief time as both the Broadway Subway and 99 B-Line are expected to temporarily co-exist until bus service adjustments and changes take place.

Once the appropriate bus network realignments take place, the 99 B-Line will have its own dedicated bus loop at Arbutus Station.
