History

During the construction of the Bloor-Danforth subway line, the tunnels for the new subway were dug in the laneways and streets directly north of Danforth Avenue rather than directly beneath in order to minimize the disruption to the Bloor and Danforth streetcars.[1] On February 26, 1966, the entire Bloor-Danforth subway line opened along with Woodbine Station which became was the eastern terminus at the time. After the opening, a majority of the Bloor and Danforth streetcar line became defunct with only stub sections running to and from the western and eastern subway terminals of Keele and Woodbine Stations. A streetcar terminal, built on the east side of the station entrance building, served the Danforth streetcar stub running east along Danforth Avenue to Luttrell Loop. This terminal also became defunct when the Bloor-Danforth subway line was further extended east to Warden Station in 1968. A parking lot now stands at what used to be streetcar loop and terminal at Woodbine Station. Streetcar tracks leading into the parking lot from Strathmore Boulevard are still visible to this day and are a remaining sign of the Woodbine Station streetcar terminal that once existed.[2]

As part of the TTC's Easier Access and Second Exit Project, new sliding doors and elevators were activated and a new second exit building was opened in Woodbine Station on September 29, 2017. Woodbine Station was officially made an accessible station. In addition, the station terminal area was modernized with new interior and exterior finishes, improved wayfinding and signage, and the repaving of the bus loop.[3]

Station description

The station architecture is comprised of three levels: street entrance level, an underground concourse level, and platform level.

The main entrance for Woodbine Station is located on the east side of Woodbine Avenue just south of Strathmore Boulevard. The collector's booth, fare gates and station bus terminal are located just inside the main entrance. A second automatic entrance is located at the northwest corner of Woodbine Avenue and Strathmore Boulevard with stairs leading directly to the subway platforms. The bus terminal features 2 bus bays stretching along the north side of the terminal. The bus terminal borders the south side of Strathmore Boulevard and surface vehicles enter the terminal from Woodbine Avenue and exit onto Strathmore Boulevard.

The underground concourse area features stairs, escalators and elevators between the eastbound and westbound subway platforms and street level. The subway platforms are of the typical Bloor-Danforth style. The colour scheme is turquoise-green with dark green trim.
