Coxwell Station is a rapid transit station and bus terminal operated by the Toronto Transit Commission in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The station is located at 355 Strathmore Boulevard, one block north of Danforth Avenue.
History
Coxwell Station opened with the original Bloor-Danforth subway line on February 26, 1966.
The station was part of TTC's Easier Access and state of good repair programs. The bus loop at Coxwell Station was closed on October 22, 2015 to allow for the installation of the new elevators and the repaving of the bus loop. Other improvements to the station included the installation of new automatic sliding doors, improved wayfinding and signage, new CCTV cameras, enhanced lighting within the station, and a new landscape design.[1]
Station description
The station architecture is comprised of three levels: street entrance level, an underground concourse level, and platform level.
Coxwell Station is situated within a residential neighbourhood and bordered to the south by a parking lot. The main entrance to the station is on the south side of Strathmore Boulevard and leads directly into the collector's booth and fare gates. The bus terminal is located inside the fare-paid area of the station and features 4 bus bays stretching around all sides of the building except for the north side. There is a wrap around bus loop at the station bus terminal where buses enter and exit in a clockwise direction. The bus bay on the southwest side of the building is a spare and is mainly used by buses for offloading passengers.
The underground concourse is a small rectangular area with stairwells, escalators and elevators which lead between street entrance level and subway platform level. In the southeast corner is the escalator and in the southwest corner is the stairwell for the eastbound platform. In the northeast corner is the escalator and in the northwest corner is the stairwell for the westbound platform. Just south of the escalator to the eastbound platform and separated by a wall is the elevator between street level and the eastbound platform. On the north side of the concourse between the stairs and escalators to the westbound platform is the elevator between the concourse at the westbound platform. Along the south side of the concourse between the stairwell and escalator for the eastbound platform is an escalator surrounded by two stairwells leading up to the bus terminal and street level. In the centre of the concourse is a Gateway Newsstand store.
The subway platforms are of the typical Bloor-Danforth style and feature white wall tiles with a dark blue trim. On the eastbound platform between the stairwell and escalator is a small office used by TTC supervisors and subway operators. Coxwell Station is the stop on the Bloor-Danforth line where most drivers start and end their shifts, unless they have to pick their train up or drop it off at Greenwood Yard.
