History

Order

In 2016, the City of Toronto made a commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. For the TTC's part, they committed to procuring fully-electric buses, with a target for a zero-emissions fleet by 2040. The TTC issued a Request for Information (RFI) in early September 2017 to survey the battery-electric bus industry. Three manufactures of long-range electric buses (BYD Auto, New Flyer, and Proterra) were identified. It was proposed that the TTC procure ten buses from each manufacturer for a long-term trial. This would allow them to verify all aspects of bus's performance.[1]

From April 16 to 20, 2018, all three manufacturers sent demonstrator buses to the TTC. They were displayed at the Hillcrest Complex, Leslie Barns, and each bus division. On April 21, the public had a chance to view the buses during Ward 4 Community Environment Day at Richview Collegiate Institute.

At its June 12, 2018 Board Meeting, the Commission approved the purchase of a further 30 buses from all three manufacturers. Ten of these buses were purchased from Proterra. The first ten buses from Proterra are expected to be delivered in the third quarter of 2019.[2][3]

Due to repeated delays in the delivery schedule by BYD, the TTC has decided to not exercise options for additional buses by BYD and was able to negotiate with both New Flyer and Proterra to increase their orders by 5 buses each so that the TTC will still receive a total of 60 eBuses in 2019.[4] The TTC will receive 25 eBuses from New Flyer, 25 eBuses from Proterra, and 10 eBuses from BYD.

Features

In addition to being the first TTC conventional buses with a fiberglass and composite body structure, these buses are the first in the fleet to have slide-out rear doors as opposed to slide-guide or swing-out rear doors, operated using two pairs of pushbutton switches mounted on both the exterior and the interior of the bus (although the exterior buttons were covered prior to entry into service). They are the first conventional buses since the Orion VIs to have rear windows. Inside, the seats on the low-floor section (with the exception of the rearmost row of seats on the driver's side) are all arranged longitudinally, and they are the first conventional buses in the TTC fleet with padded backrests in addition to padded seat cushions.

Units 3735-3749 feature roof charging rails mounted on trapezoidal bulges near the front of the roof. Additionally, they feature Proterra's DuoPower drive system instead of the ProDrive system used on units 3725-3734.

As with recent bus orders, these buses were delivered with dual LCD information screens, the Computer-Aided Dispatch and Automatic Vehicle Location (CAD/AVL) Vehicle Information System and Integrated Operations Network (VISION) system, and USB chargers mounted under certain seats. Like previous past bus orders, all units in this series are equipped with bike racks, interior and exterior CCTV cameras, and driver barriers.

Delivery

These buses are currently being delivered to Mount Dennis division. The first 10 buses were delivered between August and September 2019. The remaining 15 buses were delivered between February and April 2020.

Testing

Towards the end of August 2020, the TTC embarked on an extensive testing regimen of the three different types of electric buses. Buses 3700 (New Flyer), 3729 (Proterra), and 3758 (BYD) were loaded with bags containing 9000 pounds of water to simulate a load and operated out of service along various routes in the city.[5] The testing was paused in October 2020 and resumed on January 20, 2021.

Deployment

The TTC will initially deploy its battery-electric buses on routes that are 75km in length or shorter [6]. Initially restricted to rush hour only runs, they began to be sent out on all-day runs starting in January 2020.

This series is currently operating out of Mount Dennis division. They may appear on routes: 14 Glencairn, 29 Dufferin, 32 Eglinton West, 35 Jane, 41 Keele, 45 Kipling, 79 Scarlett Rd, 161 Rogers Rd, 168 Symington, 171 Mt Dennis, 300 Bloor-Danforth, 320 Yonge, 329 Dufferin, 332 Eglinton West, 335 Jane, 341 Keele, 396 Wilson, 501 Queen, 929 Dufferin Express, 935 Jane Express, 941 Keele Express, and 945 Kipling Express.
