Interior layout of 3700-3724

Toronto Transit Commission 3700-3724 are New Flyer Industries XE40 Xcelsior CHARGE buses built in 2019, and delivered in 2019 and 2020. They are the first battery-electric buses ordered by the TTC, as well as the first buses ordered from New Flyer by the TTC since 1999.

History

Order

In 2016, the City of Toronto made a commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. For the TTC's part, they committed to procuring fully-electric buses, with a target for a zero-emissions fleet by 2040. The TTC issued a Request for Information (RFI) in early September 2017 to survey the battery-electric bus industry. Three manufactures of long-range electric buses (BYD Auto, New Flyer, and Proterra) were identified. It was proposed that the TTC procure ten buses from each manufacturer for a long-term trial. This would allow them to verify all aspects of bus's performance.[1]

From April 16 to 20, 2018, all three manufacturers sent demonstrator buses to the TTC. They were displayed at the Hillcrest Complex, Leslie Barns, and each bus division. On April 21, the public had a chance to view the buses during Ward 4 Community Environment Day at Richview Collegiate Institute.

On May 19, 2018, the order for 10 buses from New Flyer was signed. At its June 12, 2018 Board Meeting, the Commission approved the purchase of a further 30 buses from all three manufacturers. Ten of these buses were purchased from New Flyer.[2] The first ten buses from New Flyer are expected to be delivered in the first quarter of 2019.[3][4]

Due to repeated delays in the delivery schedule by BYD, the TTC has decided to not exercise options for additional buses by BYD and was able to negotiate with both New Flyer and Proterra to increase their orders by 5 buses each so that the TTC will still receive a total of 60 eBuses in 2019.[5] The TTC will receive 25 eBuses from New Flyer, 25 eBuses from Proterra, and 10 eBuses from BYD.

New Features

These buses come with a number of features that are a first for the TTC. Some of the more notable features include external rear door buttons and the Vapor vTouch sensor-operated rear door system, a new model of bike rack (the Sportworks Apex 2 model), and unpainted aluminum Alcoa wheel rims instead of red-painted steel rims all previous TTC buses came with. These buses also have 3-digit run number boxes as opposed to the 2-digit run number boxes previously used. Unlike run number boxes used on previous TTC vehicles, the units mounted on these buses can display letters in addition to numbers. Inside, the seats on the high-floor section on the driver's side have noticeably more legroom compared to Xcelsior buses operated elsewhere, since no seats on the low-floor section are mounted on the floor of the high-floor section. All buses in this series had yellow-green 'ElectricBus' decals applied before entering service.

The last 15 units feature roof charging rails near the front, to accommodate future roof charging.

As with the previous hybrid order, these buses were delivered with dual LCD information screens, the Computer-Aided Dispatch and Automatic Vehicle Location (CAD/AVL) Vehicle Information System and Integrated Operations Network (VISION) system, and USB chargers mounted under certain seats. Like previous past bus orders, all units in this series are equipped with interior and exterior CCTV cameras and driver barriers.

Delivery

All 25 buses (3700-3724) were delivered to Arrow Rd division. The first 10 buses were delivered between April and August 2019. The remaining 15 buses were delivered between December 2019 and April 2020.

Deployment

The TTC will initially deploy its battery-electric buses on routes that are 75km in length or shorter [6].

This series is currently operating out of Arrow Rd division. They may appear on routes: 35 Jane, 36 Finch West, 46 Martin Grove, 59 Maple Leaf, 60 Steeles West, 84 Sheppard West, 99 Arrow Rd, 101 Downsview Park, 107 St Regis, 108 Driftwood, 165 Weston Rd North, 335 Jane, 396 Wilson, 927 Highway 27 Express, 935 Jane Express, 960 Steeles West Express, 984 Sheppard West Express, and 996 Wilson Express.
