History
Heavy Rebuild Program
In the 1990s, the TTC was experiencing increased ridership, but did not have the funding to purchase new buses. The Bus Heavy Rebuild Program was created in 1995 as a solution to renewing their bus fleet. The TTC settled on rebuilding buses at the 6-year and 12-year mark. Two years later, the TTC expanded the rebuild program to include buses that had reached the end of their 18-year life expectancy. A total of 535 buses were rebuilt between 1997 and 2004 as part of the program. To mark their refurbishment and life extension, buses outshopped from the Heavy Rebuild Program were renumbered in the 2000-series.
This series of buses is composed of GMDD New Look buses built from 1982 to 1983. They were the last New Looks ordered by the TTC, as well as their largest order placed with General Motors. They received their 12-year rebuild in the mid to late 1990s, and their 18-year rebuild between 2000 and 2004. After their 18-year rebuild, they were renumbered in sequence from 8740-8985, by subtracting 6500 from their original fleet number. There is no bus numbered 2321 as unit 8821 retired following an accident before its rebuild.
The buses received a full mechanical and structural overhaul. As part of their their 12-year rebuild, the buses received a number of other features. The driver's area was enlarged, which took up one passenger seat, and a blacked-out effect acrylic divider was installed in order to accommodate the new, larger driver's seat. The steering wheel was also replaced with a more modern one and power steering was added to assist drivers. Passenger seats had their padded brown vinyl inserts replaced with unpadded red fabric ones. They were given a fresh coat of paint giving the buses the TTC's current livery.
Life Extension Program
In late 2008, the TTC announced that 52 of the remaining GM New Look buses would undergo a second life extension to accommodate for service expansion and issues with the hybrid buses. The rebuild consisted mostly of body repairs, including a new paint job, and some mechanical work. The 52 units that completed the Life Extension Program (LEP) were 2246, 2251, 2252, 2255, 2265, 2266, 2268, 2271, 2280, 2281,2284, 2286, 2290, 2291, 2294, 2296, 2299, 2301, 2302, 2316, 2326, 2340, 2345, 2355, 2357, 2360, 2365, 2374, 2375, 2392, 2402, 2408, 2413, 2414, 2418, 2426, 2428, 2434, 2439, 2441, 2444, 2455, 2456, 2459, 2467, 2468, 2470, 2472, 2482, 2755, 2822, and 2855. In 2010, approximately 20 LEP Fishbowls went through LEP Phase 2 which involved various structural work.
Retirement
All New Look buses were originally scheduled to be phased out by the end of 2012. However, due to complaints of these buses not being accessible, and concerns by the MTO over their emissions, they were all phased out a year earlier than expected.
As their numbers dwindled due to retirement, the buses that remained in active service were generally 2200-2400 series units, which were rebuilt later than the others; a few 27/2800 units remained as well. The last route that regularly ran New Look buses was the 52 Lawrence West. Very rarely, GMs could be found on other routes out of Mount Dennis division. Prior to their relegation to route 52 on July 31, 2011, the buses could be found on the 59 Maple Leaf as well, and prior to June 19, 2011, the 71 Runnymede, 77 Swansea, and 90 Vaughan.
By December 2011, there were eight buses in active service and 24 more in storage that never returned to service. The official final revenue service of the New Looks was on December 16, 2011. The remaining five buses (2281, 2286, 2290, 2444 and 2855) were placed in service for the full day on route 52 Lawrence West. 2281 was the last unit left in service, as it moved to the Yonge Subway shuttle from midnight until 2:15xm. 2252 remained in use on the Toronto Island, but not in active passenger service, until April 2012.
In a surprise move after retirement, the TTC and The Shuffle Demons band got together for a promotional gig of their new album. This involved unit 2252 making a special (non-revenue) trip up and down Spadina Avenue on route 510 on July 5, 2012. The Shuffle Demons were onboard, and performed their 1980's hit "Spadina Bus", the music video for which was shot along Spadina Avenue and included footage of TTC New Looks operating on the 77 Spadina route. This was a fitting end to the fishbowl legacy in Toronto.
Preservation
At the August 2010 Commission meeting, the issue of preserving two GM buses was raised.[1] The restoration and maintenance would be included in the 2012 operating budget. 2345 and 2444 were set aside as possible candidates for preservation in 2012. They were later joined by 2252 after it finished its duty on the Toronto Islands. In December 2015, 8058 was acquired back from the Halton County Radial Railway museum and set aside for preservation. The initial plan was for the TTC to restore 2252 and 2444, and to use 2345 as a parts donor. Re-acquired 8058 faced an uncertain future, as after its donation to the museum it deteriorated severely.
Work began on the restoration of 2252 at Hillcrest Shops in 2016. By the end of September of that year, much of the bodywork was complete and the bus was being readied for painting. Restoration of 2252 was largely completed by October 2018, when it was displayed to attendees at a Family Day event at Mount Dennis Division. The unit was restored in the final livery it wore before being retired (first introduced in the mid-90's). As part of the restoration, the bus was equipped with a second-hand Luminator Spectrum destination sign.
In addition to the TTC's in-house preservation efforts, 2290 and 2291 were donated to the Transport Enthusiasts Club (TEC) who are involved in bus preservation in Ireland. The first unit was spotted in December 2013 at the Liverpool docks overseas, on its way to its new owners.
