The Société de transport de Montréal or Montreal Transit Corporation is the agency that operates buses and the Métro in Montréal, Québec.

History

The Société de transport de Montréal (STM), in 2002, replaced the Société de transport de la communauté urbaine de Montréal (STCUM) name. The name change occurred to reflect the merger of the 28 municipalities on the Island of Montreal into one 'mega-city' called Montreal. However, several of these municipalities have since left the mega-city and are now independent towns, but continue to contract with the STM to provide transit service. Funding for the contracted service, is payed by the de-merged municipalities through taxes to what remains of the mega-city of Montreal.
