The Réseau de transport de la Capitale (RTC) is the public transportation agency network operating in Quebec City, Quebec. In addition to serving the Quebec City area, service is provided, via contract, to the towns of Boischatel.

History

The Société de transport de la communauté urbaine de Québec (STCUQ) became the Société de transport de Québec on January 1, 2002 after the merger of Quebec City with its surrounding municipalities. The transit agency's public name, Réseau de transport de la Capitale, was introduced on April 24.

See Timeline of transit in Quebec City for a detailed year by year summary.

In August 2008, the RTC introduced four new logos, one for each type of service the company offers. These logos can be found on printed schedules, bus-stop timetables, in advertisements, on the bus routes map and on certain bus stop signs (Metrobus only). The services are as follows:

Métrobus routes 800-804, 807

Métrobus service logo.

The word "Métrobus" is a portmanteau of "métro" (the French word for subway) and "bus"; the word métro itself is short for métropolitain (metropolitan), meaning that metrobuses are intended to offer a city-wide service (akin to one offered by a subway system), by providing convenient access to the very edges of the urban community - from Courville (800) or Notre-Dame-des-Laurentides (801) all the way to Pointe-de-Sainte-Foy - without the need for numerous, tedious connections. Métrobus routes therefore provide service to some of the major RTC terminals, many commercial areas (such as shopping malls) as well as government buildings, and travel along the most populated areas of the city. They do so 7 days a week, and offer late-night service on Friday and Saturday nights.

Routes 800 and 801 follow the same route for approximately 40% of their length. On the shared portion of the route, the service is able to provide a frequency of 3 to 5 minutes at rush hour, and 6 to 10 minutes during regular hours. In their separated portion, the frequency is noticeably lower; a Métrobus will pass every 10 minutes at rush hour, and every 15 minutes at any other time (and during the weekends). The Metrobuses carry about 40% of RTC customers. The original 800 and 801 routes were created in 1992 by replacing and expanding route 8. The 802 route was created in 2008, replacing route 12 and making slight modifications to it to make it more time-efficient.

Route 802 is a shorter, denser Metrobus route which replaces former route 12. It follows roughly the same path as route 1 for the first part of the course, with its departure being at Station Belvédère (a major connection point in the network, allowing for a connection with, amongst others, routes 800 and 801), but branches off in the Vanier area where it provides service to Place Fleur-de-Lys, ExpoCité and the Institut de Réadaptation en Déficience Physique du Québec (Quebec institute for the readaptation of the physically deficient). It then goes by the Limoilou area, and finishes at Terminus Beauport, connecting once more with route 800 as well as a handful of regular routes.

Route 803 was launched in August 2011, replacing former route 60. This route links Les Saules terminal to Beauport terminal while serving mainly the area along the Lebourgneuf boulevard axis. Route 61 was created at the same time to cover the area no longer served by route 803.

In 2016, two new Metrobus routes were introduced. The 807 Metrobus began in june replacing the very crowded leBus route 7 following the same route with the exception of the removal of service in the Old Quebec during rush hours. On December 3, Metrobus 804 was introduce replacing leBus route 87 following the same route betweeen Ste-Foy Centre (Jules-Dallaire) and Wilfrid-Caron / Racine transfer point. Service north of Wilfrid-Caron / Racine was replaced by an extension of route 84.

leBus routes 1-185

leBus service logo.

leBus ("the Bus") routes provide service to all of Quebec City, mostly serving as a link between residential and commercial areas, through local streets and boulevards.

As a general rule of thumb:

  • Routes 10-29 operate in the Sainte-Foy/La Cité/Limoilou area.
  • Routes 30-39 operate in the Charlesbourg area.
  • Routes 44, 50-59 operate in the Beauport area.
  • Routes 64 and 65 operate in the Lebourgneuf area.
  • Routes 70-89 generally tend to operate in the Les Saules area, though there are a few exceptions (such as route 72 or route 89, for example). Route 87 has became Métrobus 804 on December 3rd, 2016.
  • Routes 92, 94 and 95 operate in Saint-Augustin.

Routes 1, 3, 4, and 9 have no common area of service, but all five pass through the Jacques-Cartier terminus in downtown Quebec. Route 7 was replaced by Métrobus 807 starting August 20 and no longer travel to within the city walls as it will be operated by articulated hybrid buses.

This service is offered on an everyday, all-day basis with a few exceptions:

  • Routes 9, 22, 29, 33, 57, 70, 78, 85 and 88 are routes that were created specifically for people who work in industrial areas, and are offered exclusively on weekdays during rush hour, with the exception of route 85 which offers limited service during weekends.
    • Route 70 is an extension of route 87, and becomes a #87 upon finishing its one and only run of the day.
  • Routes 65, 94 and 95 are only operated during weekdays, and only during rush hours.
    • Route 65 is a modified, more direct version of route 64, and completely replaces it during rush hours (towards Quebec during the morning, and towards Lebourgneuf during the afternoon).
    • Routes 94 and 95 are modified versions of route 92. Whereas route 92 comes to an end at the intercity coach terminal in Sainte-Foy, routes 94 and 95 continue on until they reach François-Xavier-Garneau College. Route 92 remains active during 94/95 service.
  • Route 59 does not operate on weekends.

Routes 107, 111, 125, 133, 136 and 185, despite being part of the leBus series, are in fact accelerated routes which loosely correspond their regular-service counterparts, but do not service every stop. They are offered exclusively during weekdays at rush hours.

The 60 routes in this series carry 45% of the customers. Route 807 (formerly 7, along the Chemin Sainte-Foy axis) alone carries 11% of all RTC customers.

eXpress routes (Series 200, 300 and 500)

eXpress service logo.

59 routes comprise the RTC eXpress service. This service directly connects suburbs towards major working and studying areas of the city. The eXpress bus operates to the Parlement Hill sector (200 Series), the Sainte-Foy and Garneau CEGEP and the Laval University (300 series) and the shopping and working area along Boulevard Laurier in the Sainte-Foy district (500 series). Generally, service will operate from suburbs during the morning rush hours and towards them during the afternoon peak hours. The 500 series were introduced in August 2013 alongside changes in the 300 series that was previously serving the area now served by the 500 series routes.

Exceptions:

  • Route 280 offers afternoon peak service towards the city.
  • Route 290 operates in the Old City instead of the Parliament hill area.
  • Many 300 series offer a midday round trip (from suburbs and to suburbs) (except summer), they also offer a mid-evening trip towards the suburbs.
  • The 330 eXpress route offers midday service (except summer).
  • Routes 331, 354 & 391 serve the western part of Sainte-Foy instead of the CEGEP and University.
  • Route 332 operates reverse of the peak (out to suburbs in the morning and from them in the afternoon).

In general, express routes tend to reflect the number of their leBus counterpart (e.g. routes 277 and 377 follow the general path of route 77, then take the expressway to Quebec and Sainte-Foy respectively), though it is not always the case (e.g. route 332 is completely unrelated to route 32).

Although they account for 40% of RTC routes, they only carried 9% of all RTC customers in 2013.

Late night service (Couche-Tard) 907-992

On some routes on Friday and Saturday nights, late night bus service is available from downtown (Place d'Youville) on selected routes at 1:30am and a couple routes at 3:00am.

Some neighbourhood routes (Saint-Augustin) and suburbs to downtown also operate during this period. While some late nights routes are identical to their daytime counterparts, many routes are shorted, extended and/or merged during late night service. Since August 2013, those routes are numbered in the 900 series, formerly operating with the same number as the daytime route.

This series carries less then 1% of the yearly RTC ridership.

Special events shuttle - 400 Series

Special events shuttle started with the 410 route for the 2014 Quebec City summer festival linking a temporary Park-n-ride lot at Hydro-Québec in Lebourgneuf to downtown Quebec City. Success was immediate and in 2015, 3 new routes were added (420, 430 and 450) and they added more events with the special shuttle service . Those routes are not fixed routes and will change according to the event location and temporary park-n-ride location avaliability .

  • Route 410 serves the Hydro-Quebec temporary park-n-ride lot in Lebourgneuf
  • Route 420 serves the Laval University temporary park-n-ride, this route is not in service when the special event can be reach by Metrobus service.
  • Route 430 serves the Charlesbourg area
  • Route 450 serves the Beauport Area

écolobus route 21

écolobus service logo.

During the spring of 2007, the RTC initiated a pilot project experimenting with the use of fully electric vehicles in the historic parts of town. The project was a success, and the company purchased eight Technobus Gulliver minibuses from the Italian company in 2008 (in addition to the test vehicle purchased in 2007, which was never put in revenue service).

The project started out as a free service. Since July 5th 2010 however, a fare of 1$ was established in order to offer fair competition to taxi drivers who actively complained about the service being free of charge. Users with a monthly pass or a single-day pass may use those to board the ecolobus (tickets are also valid but wasteful since they are worth more than the standard two-dollar fare). The cash fare was raised to the current 2$ fare in August 2012.

These buses often make the headlines, especially during the winter, due to their poor mechanical performance and battery issues. After a bus fire and two cases of overheating batteries requiring fire fighters, on August 24, 2011, RTC temporary retired all electric vehicles from the route and replaced them with standard buses. After modifications to the vehicle, extensive testing and some route modifications, the electric buses were back on Old Quebec streets on June 18 2012. Since their return the buses have proved to be far more reliable then before their withdrawal.

Due to rising costs of maintenance and expected retirement of the buses in 2016, RTC ended electric bus service on the route on January 17th, 2015. All traces of the presence of the Ecolobus were retired at the start of the 2015 summer schedule and the route now operates as route 21 in leBus series with standard vehicules. It is expected to replace standard buses with hybrid midibus in the next few years.

Fares

Front cover of fares pamphlet.

The following is a comprehensive table of the RTC's fares as of July 1, 2016:

User category Monthly pass Metropolitain Pass
(RTC, STLevis, TCJC, PLUMobile)
Ticket 5 day pass Unlimited weekends
(Unlimited rides starting at 6 pm Friday
until end of service on Sunday)
1 day pass Cash
General 85.60$ 128.50$ 2.95$ 28.50$ 15.00$ 8.25$ 3.50$
Elderly 52.00$ 89.00$ 2.25$ 21.50$
Students (19 and over) 57.00$ 104.50$ 2.95$
18 years and younger 2.25$
5 years and younger Free

Paying in cash allows users to ask for a transfer ticket when boarding the bus, enabling a connection with an unlimited number of buses (provided the route is different from the one the connection was issued on), for a period of 90 minutes. Paying with an ticket on a electronic (OPUS or Occassionelle) card allows for the same connection to be made, for 90 minutes only as of July 1, 2016. Tickets must be bought in pairs (2,4,6...). Old paper tickets are no longer accepted (although paper tickets are still produced for paratransit usage only)

The 2-day and 7-day passes are activated upon first use (as opposed to being activated upon payment), and remain valid until the next day at 23h59 and the seventh day at 23h59, respectively.

In addition to these, a new group ticket was introduced, allowing one adult and 10 children aged between 6 and 11 to board the bus. This group ticket works in a similar fashion to regular tickets, in that they only allow one boarding plus a connection valid for two hours.

The Écolobus 2$ fare was abolished as part of the fare changes on July 1, 2016.

Fleet number info

All vehicles in the RTC's fleet bear a unique four-digit identification number. More often than not, the first two digits indicate the year of purchase, and the last two are an arbitrary sequential number assigned at the garage upon reception of the vehicles.

For instance: vehicle 0821 was the 21st vehicle received in 2008.

There are, however, some misleading fleet numbers. For example, buses numbered 02xx were purchased in 2003.

Articulated buses start with xx51 onwards.

In addition, some vehicles may bear letters with the four-digit number:

A (obsolete)
Formerly assigned to Articulated buses. Only two buses were ever assigned this letter, namely A9225 and A9226.
B (semi-obsolete)
Formerly assigned to vehicles with Baultar driver seats, was also used on a Banque Laurentienne wrapped bus in 2010
C (obsolete)
Formerly used to indicate vehicles equipped with passenger counters.
It was also used in January/February 2011 on buses wrapped for Carnaval de Québec.
D (obsolete)
Used in 2009 for buses with a Desjardins wrap (for the Desjardins shuttle #400)
d (obsolete)
Used in 2010 for buses with a Desjardins wrap. The lowercase D's used were actually the now-obsolete letter P (see below), rotated to resemble a d.
H (semi-obsolete)
Formerly used on all-day (fr Habituel) buses (as opposed to Limited buses - see below). Was also used on Hybrid vehicle H1001; it is still used on the front interior fleet numbers stickers of that vehicle.
L
Indicates that bus is on Limited use (mainly used during rush hour service, midday service on weekdays or special events). Usually, buses older than six years receive the limited status.
M
This letter has served different purposes throughout the years. While briefly used to designed vehicles that were stored at the Metrobus service center, this letter is generally used to distinguish "Maquillé" (wrapped) vehicles.
N
Indicate that the vehicle has the Nomade equipment on-board for testing of the new real time information system.
P (obsolete)
Formerly used on buses with prototype electronic Perception (for the then-pilot OPUS cards).
R (obsolete)
Formerly assigned to vehicles with Recaro driver seats.
S (semi-obsolete)
Formerly assigned to buses with Ski racks. Recently, buses have been sighted bearing this letter; it is currently presumed that it is either a reference to the advert on the side-wrap, or to the fact that it has, quite simply, a Side-wrap.
T (obsolete)
Formerly indicated a Tripper, a bus that would run for very short periods of time on select routes.
W (obsolete)
Formerly indicated a bus that has WiFi on board (pilot project).
