Destination signs

Mylar (curtain) signs

Each bus was typically equipped with a three-piece destination sign; containing (in order), the route number, the letter describing the variation the route took and the end destination or terminal.

  • Route number: self-explanatory
  • Route letter:
  • A white letter on a black background indicated a local service.
  • A white letter on a red background indicated a limited or restricted stop service.
  • A white letter on a black background with a red diagonal "/" over the letter indicated an express route.
  • Route destination: Most routes were simplistic in nature, with "Downtown" and "City Line" likely being the most popular. More obscure destinations would be either a cross-street nearby, the loop or Metro Rail station or the town/village in which the bus ends. Some long-distance commuter routes carried "Buffalo" instead of "Downtown". This was especially necessary on Niagara Falls trips, due to route ending in technically two downtown areas. In addition, a terminal at a Metro Rail Station included either the name of the station or "Main" as its terminal. Additionally, shopping plazas, malls, or hospitals could be used.

Electronic signs

The basics of the curtain destination sign continued onto the electronic signs from their inception. To the NFTA's benefit, additional messages could be programmed into the signs, sometimes flashing messages unrelated to the route being served, but a clever marketing tool, nonetheless. Messages like "Go Sabres" or "Go Bills" were programmed, in addition to holiday greetings around the holidays like "Holiday Greetings" or "Happy Holidays".

With the introduction of electronic signs, the NFTA decided a allow the route letter "diagonal" and red background to retire, and instead, added "via Thruway", "via Expressway" or other variation to cycle as a second message on the sign.

Color coding of Niagara Falls routes.

Approximately 2012. the NFTA color-coded a number of Niagara Falls-based routes, in hopes of introducing routes in various colors, instead of customers unfamiliar with the system having to remember individual numbers. This became especially helpful for passengers without English as their primary language. In addition, those timetables were colored to match the colors used on an LED color bar used under the destination signs.

  • Red, routes 40 and 210
  • Blue, route 50
  • Yellow, route 52
  • Green, routes 55 and 55T (trolley)

Though never formally discontinued, the practice tapered off, and there are few signs of it existing.

Curbside signage

The information is rather simple, with the route number and route name showing, with an additional message of abnormal routing, where warranted, such as an express or limited route, or "via"-type routing.

Some special signs indicating limited-stop service include:

  • First stop Fillmore
  • First stop City Line
  • First stop Union
  • First stop Amherst

These limited-stop trips allowed passengers in outer-reaching destinations a near guaranteed seat on the bus. The practice was discontinued due to confusion with passengers not understanding the limited-stop meaning when applied.

Some special signs indicating express-stop service include:

  • via Thruway
  • via Expressway

Presently, route 24 Genesee offers limited-stop service on their 24L variation, in which the side signage will flash a second message:

  • Limited Stops

Rear signage

Though not consistent, the back signage allowing a maximum of three characters (when available), shows the route number and possibly the letter variation only. The letter variation, of note, could not be achieved in school routes, or Metrolink routes.

Active routes

All present services are ADA compliant, with all buses of the low-floor variety. Buses scheduled may also provide amenities such as Wi-Fi and bike racks. Of note, buses with Wi-Fi capabilities do not have USB charging stations at seats, although some other agencies introduced it at the same time as Wi-Fi.

Note: although the International Railway Company and Niagara Frontier Transit System offered overnight service on routes, the NFTA entered their service without overnight service, with most routes generally operating as early as 4:30am and as late as 1:30 or 2:00am. The only time services crossed the 2:00 until 4:30 time period was the 20E Entertainment Shuttle or Late-Night Express (since eliminated).

Most conventional transit services enter service as early as 5:00am and operate as late as 1:00am. Express services operate 1-2 trips in the peak direction each weekday. Niagara County services operate from approximately 6:00am and may operate as late as midnight. Weekend services on all routes operate on a reduced and/or later beginning and ending time.

Since 1993 and 1994, the NFTA rationalized their routes, eliminating many branches, and streamlining them with more direct routing when possible. With this implementation, the NFTA also made strides in eliminating many route variations, resulting in either a single route letter (usually "A" or "B") or no more than three to four unique letters used. In addition, a sizable increase was made to suburban services, particularly operating outside of specified rush and shoulder periods, including new weekend services on many routes.

All of the improvements taken increased the number of buses in use outside of rush-periods, however, lessening of the branches used on some routes (like 4 Broadway) evened out some of the total buses used during the course of a day.

Buses operate out of three divisions; Gisel-Wolford (Babcock-William), Frontier (Kenmore-Military) and Cold Springs (Main-Michigan). On weekends, all buses operate from Frontier station, however, maintain their regularly assigned division when operating out of Frontier.

NOTE: On June 17, 2020, the NFTA stated that five routes would be temporarily discontinued, due to the COVID-19 virus emergency, worldwide. With the elimination, the NFTA used the removed service to supplement services that were near or at capacity, with the new social-distancing requirements by the government.

Routes 7, 29, 54, 68 and 79 were the five routes affected. The NFTA will (at a late date) determine if the removal of the service may be deemed permanent. Thus, routes are still listed as active, until decided.
