The Réseau de transport de la Capitale (RTC) is the public transport network operating in Quebec City. The RTC was established on June 1, 2002. The company has undergone three name changes throughout the years:
- Commission de Transport de la communauté urbaine de Québec (CTCUQ): 1969 - 1994
- Société de transport de la communauté urbaine de Québec (STCUQ): 1994 - 2002
- Réseau de transport de la Capitale (RTC): 2002 - present
The RTC offers a variety of services to all the Quebec City area and, via contract, to the towns of Boischatel and Shannon/Valcartier military base.

- Tests on newly acquired hybrid bus are successful; the RTC announces that it will order 100 more hybrid vehicles during the next few years.

- The RTC's position on Google Transit changed mid-January, and by February 4th, the RTC becomes available on Google Transit, meaning transit users with mobile phones are now able to plan itineraries on the go using Google Maps technology.
Routes

In August 2008, the RTC introduced four new logos, one for each type of service the company offers. These logos can be found on printed schedules, bus-stop timetables, in advertisments, on the bus routes map and on certain bus stop signs (Metrobus only). The services are as follows:
Metrobus: routes 800-802
The word "Métrobus" is a portmanteau of "métro" (the French word for subway) and "bus"; the word métro itself is short for métropolitain (metropolitan), meaning that metrobuses are intended to offer a city-wide service (akin to one offered by a subway system), by providing convenient access to the very edges of the urban community - from Courville (800) or Notre-Dame-des-Laurentides (801) all the way to Pointe-de-Sainte-Foy - without the need for numerous, tedious connections. Metrobus routes therefore provide service to some of the major RTC terminals, many commercial areas (such as shopping malls) as well as government buildings, and travel along the most populated areas of the city. They do so 7 days a week, and offer late-night service on Friday and Saturday nights.
Routes 800 and 801 follow the same trajectory for approximately 40% of their length. On the shared portion of the route, the service is able to provide a frequency of 3 to 5 minutes at rush hour, and 6 to 10 minutes during regular hours. In their separate part, the frequency is noticeably lower; a Metrobus will pass every 10 minutes at rush hour, and every 15 minutes at any other time (and during the weekends). The Metrobuses carry about 40% of RTC customers.
Route 802 is a shorter, denser Metrobus route which replaces former route 12. It follows roughly the same path as route 1 for the first part of the course, with its departure being at Station Belvédère (a major connection point in the network, allowing for a connection with, amongst others, routes 800 and 801), but branches off in the Vanier area where it provides service to Place Fleur-de-Lys, ExpoCité and the Institut de Réadaptation en Déficience Physique du Québec (Quebec institute for the readaptation of the physically deficient). It then goes by the Limoilou area, and finishes at Terminus Beauport, connecting once more with route 800 as well as a handful of regular routes (including route 60).
History
The original 800 and 801 routes were created in 1992 by replacing and expanding route 8. The 802 route was created in 2008, replacing route 12 and making slight modifications to it to make it more time-efficient.
In the near future, a Metrobus 803 will replace current route 60, with some significant changes to the route itself, a largely improved frequency and reduced number of stops. The RTC intends to launch route 803 in August 2011.
A Metrobus 804 is also planned (albeit much later), which will replace route 87. Again, a few changes will be made to the route as a whole, the main modifications mostly regarding the frequency and number of stops. As of January 2011, no fixed date for the launching of route 804 has been officially announced, though some speculate that it could be as late as 2015.
Since late 2009, routes 800 and 801 are mostly (but not exclusively) operated by NovaBUS Artic articulated buses. According to a RTC official, no plans currently exist to assign articulated buses to route 802, although the idea has not been rejected.
leBus: routes 1-185
leBus ("the Bus") routes provide service to all of Quebec City, mostly serving as a link between residential and commercial areas, through local streets and boulevards.
As a general rule of thumb:
- Routes 10-29 operate in the Sainte-Foy/La Cité/Limoilou axis of operation;
- Routes 30-39 operate in the Charlesbourg area;
- Routes 44, 50-59 operate in the Beauport area;
- Routes 60, 64 and 65 operate in the Lebourgneuf area;
- Routes 70-89 generally tend to operate in the Les Saules area, though there are a few exceptions (such as route 72 or route 89, for example).
- Routes 92, 94 and 95 operate in Saint-Augustin.
Routes 1, 3, 4, 7 and 9 have no genuine common area of service, but all five pass through the Jacques-Cartier terminus in downtown Quebec.
This service is offered on an everyday, all-day basis with a few exceptions:
- Routes 9, 22, 29, 33, 57, 70, 78, 85 and 88 are routes that were created specifically for people who work in industrial areas, and are offered exclusively on weekdays during rush hour, with the exception of route 85 which offers limited service during weekends.
- Route 70 is an extension of route 87, and becomes a #87 upon finishing its one and only run of the day.
- Routes 65, 94 and 95 are only offered during weekdays, and only during rush hours.
- Route 65 is a modified, more direct version of route 64, and completely replaces it during rush hours (towards Quebec during the morning, and towards Lebourgneuf during the afternoon).
- Routes 94 and 95 are modified versions of route 92. Whereas route 92 comes to an end at the intercity coach terminal in Sainte-Foy, routes 94 and 95 continue on until they reach François-Xavier-Garneau College. Route 92 remains active during 94/95 service.
- Route 59 does not operate during weekends
Routes 107, 111, 125, 133, 136 and 185, despite being part of the leBus series, are in fact accelerated routes which loosely correspond their regular-service counterparts, but do not service every stop they encounter. They are offered exclusively during weekdays at rush hours.
Route 185 provides two departures outside rush hour (one in the morning and one during late afternoon).
eXpress: routes 215-391
Express routes are a weekday-only, rush hour service intended to accommodate office workers and students who live in the suburbs of Quebec city, but work either in downtown Quebec or in Sainte-Foy.
For this reason, express routes are divided into two categories, namely the 200's and the 300's. Express routes in 200 series (214-295) connect residential suburbs to downtown Quebec and the parliament hill in the morning (and the other way around in the afternoon). Routes in the 300 (315-391) series connect those suburbs to the sector of Sainte-Foy in the morning (once more, with a trip back to the suburbs in the afternoon). The only notable exception is route 332, which brings its passengers to its suburb (Saint-Rodrigue) in the morning, and back to Sainte-Foy in the afternoon.
A few of the Sainte-Foy (300) express routes offer an extra departure towards the suburbs in the evening; this is mostly to accommodate university students who have evening classes. A handful of major express routes (e.g. 330, 350) offer regular morning service in one direction, and regular afternoon/evening service in the other.
In general, express routes tend to reflect the number of their leBus counterpart (e.g. routes 277 and 377 follow the general path of route 77, then take the expressway to Quebec and Sainte-Foy respectively), though it is not always the case (e.g. route 332 is completely unrelated to route 32).
As of 2008, express routes carry an estimated 10% of RTC customers.
écolobus: route 21
During the spring of 2007, the RTC initiated a pilot project experimenting with the use of fully electric vehicles in the historic parts of town. The project was a success, and the company purchased eight Technobus Gulliver minibuses from the Italian company in 2008 (in addition to the test vehicle purchased in 2007, which was never put in revenue service).
The project started out as a free service. Since July 5th 2010 however, a fare of 1$ was established in order to offer fair competition to taxi drivers who actively complained about the service being free of charge. Users with a monthly pass or a single-day pass may use those to board the ecolobus (tickets are also valid but wasteful since they are worth more than the standard one-dollar fare).
These buses often make the headlines, especially during the winter, due to their poor mechanical performance and battery issues.
Fares

- *Note: on days during which Saturday/Sunday service is offered, this method of payment is valid for two people, regardless of age.
Paying in cash allows users to ask for a special ticket, enabling a connection with an unlimited number of buses (provided the route is different from the one the connection was issued on), for a period of 90 minutes. Paying with an electronic (OPUS card) ticket allows for the same connection to be made, albeit for a period of 120 minutes.
It should be noted that as of October 1st 2010, tickets are sold exclusively in electronic format, and in lots of four only. Paper tickets purchased prior to October 1st are still being accepted; however, while paper tickets are also eligible for the same physical paper connection ticket as cash payment, it will only be valid for 90 minutes rather than 120.
When the RTC discontinued paper tickets, it also introduced a new, special smart card called the "Occasional" smart card. Unlike the regular OPUS card, which has a one-time cost upon purchase, this card is completely free. However, it can only hold 12 tickets at any given time (the regular OPUS can hold 20), and it cannot be refilled. Once all tickets are exhausted, the card becomes unusable and must be thrown away.
Fleet number info
All vehicles in the RTC's fleet bear a unique four-digit identification number. More often than not, the first two digits indicate the year of purchase, and the last two are an arbitrary sequential number assigned at the garage upon reception of the vehicles.
- For instance: vehicle 0821 was the 21st vehicle received in 2008.
There are, however, some misleading fleet numbers. For example, buses numbered 02xx were purchased in 2003.
In addition, some vehicles may bear a letter in front of the four-digit number.
- A (obsolete)
- Formerly assigned to Articulated buses. Only two buses were ever assigned this letter, namely A9225 and A9226.
- B (semi-obsolete)
- Formerly assigned to vehicles with Baultar driver seats. As of fall 2010, used on a bus with a Banque Laurentienne wrapper.
- C (obsolete)
- Formerly used to indicate vehicles equipped with passenger counters.
- Used in January/February 2011 on buses wrapped for the Carnaval de Québec.
- D
- Used in 2009 for buses with a Desjardins wrapper (for the Desjardins shuttle #400)
- d
- Used in 2010 for buses with a Desjardins wrapper. The lowercase D's used were actually the now-obsolete letter P (see below), rotated to resemble a d.
- H
- Formerly used on all-day (fr Habituel) buses (as opposed to Limited buses - see below). Currently used on Hybrid vehicle H1001.
- L
- Indicates that bus is on Limited use (only gets out of the garage to perform minimal rush-hour service). Usually, buses older than six years receive the limited status.
- M
- This letter has served different purposes throughout the years. Initially, it stood for Maquillé, which is the French word for "wrapped". It indicated that the vehicle boasted a special wrapping (usually an advert, but not always so) instead of the usual livery.
- Now however, M stands for Metrobus, and means that a non-articulated vehicle is stored in the Metrobus garage. For quite some time, it was the case for most of the 3rd-gen NovaBUS LFS from the 09xx series. As of February 2011, however, most (if not all) of them were transferred to the regular depot and therefore lost this letter.
- P (obsolete)
- Formerly used on buses with prototype electronic Perception (for the then-pilot OPUS cards).
- R (obsolete)
- Formerly assigned to vehicles with Recaro driver seats.
- S (semi-obsolete)
- Formerly assigned to buses with Ski racks. Recently, buses have been sighted bearing this letter; it is currently presumed that it is either a reference to the advert on the side-wrap, or to the fact that it has, quite simply, a Side-wrap.
- T (obsolete)
- Formerly indicated a Tripper, a bus that would run for very short periods of time on select routes.
