Ottawa-Carleton Regional Transit Commission St. Laurent Station
St. Laurent
|
St. Laurent Station is located at St. Laurent Boulevard and the Queensway. The Transitway level connects to the St. Laurent Shopping Centre's lower level. It serves as a major hub between transitway and local east end routes and has a ticket sales and information office.
Original Transitway station
The station has two separate platform areas. One platform area underground serves route 95, express routes and other routes using the transitway. A surface/ground level platform serves local routes. The two platforms are connected primarily via escalators, which are rare in transitway stations, in addition to the standard staircases and elevators.
This station was the most complex and most expensive to build as it required the complete reconstruction of the St. Laurent/Queensway interchange and the construction of a tunnel to allow the transitway to cross underneath the Queensway.
In addition to serving the shopping centre, it also serves numerous commercial and industrial areas in the area, and is a major transfer point for east end commuters, making this a busy station.
Future plans involve this area being designated a "Transit Oriented Development" zone, and to accomplish that, the city is planning mixed use buildings on the southern side of the 417 in the former Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) lot. Currently this lot is owned by the federal government.
Confederation Line LRT station
This station will be a stop on the "Confederation Line" LRT project. The surface level will remain as bus platforms while the lower level will become the light rail platforms.
Construction on the new station began in Summer 2015 and is expected to be completed by Winter 2016.[1]
