The New Flyer Industries MiDi was a medium-duty, low-floor transit and shuttle bus designed for a 10-year, 350,000-mile life. It is a rebadged Alexander Dennis Enviro200 adapted for use in Canada and the United States. The New Flyer MiDi made its debut at the 2013 APTA Bus and Paratransit conference.[1] Autobus Paquette, under contract to the CIT Laurentides north of Montreal, was the first to take delivery of the MiDi.[2]
Alexander Dennis and New Flyer, both interested in marketing a medium-duty bus in Canada and the United States, announced a joint venture to bring the Enviro200 to North America. A left-hand drive prototype adapted for North America was soon developed and built in the United Kingdom. While the first prototypes were built overseas, production has been moved to New Flyer's Minnesota facility.
ABC Companies became the exclusive distributor of the MiDi and Xcelsior to United States private bus and shuttle operators in 2014.[3] The same year, Giradin became the distributor of the MiDi to customers in Ontario and Atlantic provinces, in addition to Quebec.[4]
In May 2017, New Flyer and Alexander Dennis announced that MiDi production will be transferred in the fourth quarter of the year from New Flyer's Minnesota facility to Alexander Dennis's facility in Indiana. Sales, marketing and aftermarket parts will also be transitioned to Alexander Dennis with the full support of New Flyer. In total, New Flyer has produced 200 MiDi buses for 22 customers.[5]
Design
Like the Enviro200, the MiDi has a body constructed from bolted aluminum extrusions and a welded steel chassis. The majority of the body panels are of aluminum, and the roof structure uses a single piece of composite material.
Unlike the Enviro200, the MiDi does not have a rear window—this area taken up by emissions equipment. The interior of the MiDi is largely the same, however the area around the step to the high floor section is configured differently.
The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority and Martha's Vineyard Regional Transit Authority are some of the first operators to specify the more standard North American bumpers on the front and rear. In addition, the buses for Martha's Vineyard have more pronounced wheel arches.
