Amtrak, officially known as the National Railroad Passenger Corporation, is the national railway passenger carrier in the United States. The United States federal government is a majority stockholder of Amtrak and it is operated as a for-profit company.
In 1970, the US Congress took over a majority of these intercity passenger rail services from the private railroad companies as they had been operating at a huge net loss over many years. Amtrak was formed as a conglomeration of those intercity passenger rail services which provide nationwide rail service in the Continental United States. Amtrak national operations began on May 1, 1971.
To this date, Amtrak operates over 21,400 miles of routes and serves over 500 destinations in 46 states, the District of Columbia, and three Canadian provinces.[1]
